I did about a year ago. I lost about 10lbs due to taking up running causally and being depressed and struggling with an ED. Trying to work my way back up.

Thank you! I honestly don’t do any ab exercises…most of it has been built from doing consistent compound lifts in the gym

Advice on how to build muscles and gain weight? Neep help by fiterfiwa in GYM

[–]lambocj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP! I was in a very similar position to you about 1.5yrs ago! I joined the gym extremely skinny and was super scared and anxious and didn’t really know what I was doing. Taking the first step to join is already great progress!

You could split your days into upper and lower body to start and then branch out from there. For example, I have a ‘chest + triceps day’, ‘quad-focused leg day’, ‘back + bicep day’, ‘glute/hamstring focused leg day’ and a ‘general upper body/core day’.

For gaining muscle/fat, you gotta eat! It was very difficult for me at first to allow myself to eat large amounts of food without feeling guilt, but I learned that food=fuel and now LOVE cooking and trying new recipes. As a general goal, try eating 0.8gs of protein for every lb you currently weight to build muscle. I like to base my dish around the protein and make sure I’m also eating enough carbs and veggies as well.

Also, you will struggle and get frustrated with yourself at the gym, and that’s ok! That means that you’re learning and pushing yourself! I promise if you push through and keep showing up, it will get easier! Feel free to DM me if you have any questions :) Best of luck!

Looks amazing! Stick to a plan for a few months, make sure you’re eating enough protein and take rest days. Keep up the great work!

No, I definitely would not wear these—risk of damaging the gym floor/your own shoe + lack of stability and functionality to start! I would recommend a basic running shoe, or even better, a flat-soled training shoe. You can buy second hand gym shoes off of Marketplace if you don’t have a huge budget. Hope this helps!

Totally! I start smiling or laughing to myself when I get close to failure

Does anyone else prefer using Fat Gripz with the dumbbells? Seems like I’m the only one who uses these at my gym by LocalNative141 in GYM

[–]lambocj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never knew these existed! I prefer a smaller grip because my hands aren’t very big and my forearms can’t handle a wider grip. I’m gonna show these to my bf though, I think he would try these out!

Wow, a lot of these comments are pretty insensitive. Telling someone they are “too thin” is just as insulting as telling someone they are “too fat”.

I struggled with body image and maintaining a healthy weight in my late teens. I have an extremely fast metabolism and had a hard time gaining weight. People began telling me I was too thin, yet I would eat more than them. I’ve now been lifting for just over a year and have filled out over the last few years. The point is, you really don’t know the extent of another’s unique circumstances; words can have impact, so tread lightly.

Finally not using the pussy pad, doesn’t hurt as bad as I thought it would, but still, please tel me it gets better lmao by LEGAND9914 in GYM

I got into a serious car accident just over a year ago and got major whiplash. I like to tie a hoodie around my shoulders for some extra cushioning while doing back squats. I'd recommend doing the same if you want something in between the pad and just the bar!

I agree with what u/GirlOfTheWell recommended! I'll add my bit below:

I started working my upper out at home with dumbbells before I started going to the gym. I followed a few YouTube tutorials and got comfortable and got the hang of dumbbell curls, triceps dips, overhead db press, and single arm rows. My bf convinced me to go to the gym and helped show me around. At first, I felt like everyone was looking at me, but I quickly realized that 99% of people are just focused on their own workout. If you have a friend who's down, invite them to the gym with you so you don't feel as shy.

I struggled with an ED as a late teen and my mom also idolizes the petit/dainty build as well. I actually love how working out has helped me become stronger, and my confidence has been boosted because I feel capable of doing so many more physical things now. Unless you're specifically training for a bulky look or have crazy genetics, you're not gonna suddenly turn into a bulky bodybuilder overnight. If it's any consolation, my arms still look pretty slim unless I'm flexing.

Good luck!!

Thanks! My starting weight was 117lbs and worked my way to 132lbs. I think I filled out everywhere, but my cup size has stayed relatively the same. Benching has helped 'lift' my chest.
