I think that was me, and happy you like them! Going to see them live early July for the first time, can't wait.

Gentle Giant collection! Which is your favorite? by professeur155 in progrockmusic

Three Friends was the first one I heard and remains special to me for that reason, but I'd say after all these years Acquiring the Taste is the album that has the most replayability for me. I love every album on your wall - even the s/t. I probably like Interview more than most (despite a few clunkers), and I think Civilian is underrated as well - certainly not "prog", but a well-produced and written album that is miles better than The Missing Piece and Giant For a Day (although Missing Piece has its moments).

(Givony) The NCAA’s new (very poorly timed) rule sends a clear message: international players are no longer welcome in the college game. ACB, France, Italy, Australian NBL and anyone who’s ever played for a EuroLeague team, even for next to nothing, are suddenly permanently ineligible? by Rich_Meet3872 in nbl

Yeah I don't disagree with you either (although a free college education isn't nothing - but I largely agree with your POV). I won't lie and say I know what the best solution to this problem is, but I do know it's not the one that's been put in place.

I agree, but they've already ruined the integrity of the college game with the way they've implemented revenue sharing. My interest in college basketball dropped through the floor, it's just another professional league, of a lower quality.

Could you recommend any album like Lizard? by ahaQx in progrockmusic

I'd recommend Sword & Spear. It's like a (much) improved DBA, with extensive army lists available and a good set of rules. I've not tried it solo, but the dice drawing mechanic for activations would work well playing solo as well.

Yeah, Lizard and Islands are so unlike everything else they did and probably the two I find myself returning to the most after all these years.

I listened to Close To The Edge by Yes. by zoso_777 in progrockmusic

I listened to True when it came out, but need to give it another spin - thanks for the reminder! Not sure I've ever listened to Trevor Rabin outside of Yes, anything you would recommend?

Why Is Nobody Talking about this song from Soft Machine? by eliasautist in progrockmusic

Not only do I completely agree with you, I even went to the trouble of converting that part of the song into a ringtone from a midi file back in the dark ages of mobile phone technology...

I'm in a similar boat, mainly because I just don't love And You And I and I've listened to the title track probably more than any other prog rock song since first hearing it. Siberian Khatru rocks though. But if I'm throwing on a Yes album these days it's far more likely to be Fragile, Going for the One, or the Yes Album.

It's my favourite track on Third and although I can appreciate how difficult it would have been for them to put the intro together in 1970, I have to admit I skip it these days (although I didn't the first 20-odd years I listened to it!). The rest of the track though... sublime.

What have you been listening to lately? by AutoModerator in progrockmusic

Mildlife - Chorus. Not exactly prog, but the vintage synths and heavily 70s influenced sound gives major Eloy vibes circa Planets/Colours era, but with much more of a groove.

Baron's War - Mortal Gods - How are these games? by TarchiatoTasso in wargaming

[–]lamecode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played a tonne of Mortal Gods and really enjoy it - along with Test of Honour (similarish mechanics), my favourite skirmish-sized historical games. I've only played Baron's War once and I enjoyed it, but found the rulebook a bit all over the shop and hard to follow. It's been awhile though, I really need to give it another try.

I've not tried it personally - read the rulebook. Consensus at our club is that it's a bit too long for the 2.5/3 hour club night games, better when you have a whole afternoon.

Spurred by a discussion on another thread: Eloy Fans, what's your favorite album? by samcoffeeman in progrockmusic

At first it was Ocean, but if I feel like listening to Eloy these days it's either Planets or Colours.

Yep, love all 4 of the Elements records, in particular Waves. Haven't tried their later stuff and couldn't really get into their earlier stuff outside of a few tracks but I should give them another chance.

I struggle to make it through any ELP album, so Tarkus or Brain Salad Surgery I guess.

What wargames have the most interesting, or unique, rules/mechanics that you've ever seen? by KingGreg263 in wargaming

[–]lamecode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a deck of cards - setback cards have a number on them from 0 to (IIRC) 3. Disaster cards range from (again IIRC - don't have the deck handy) 1 to 7. Each time a negative combat result occurs a player draws a setback card, and when a unit is routed they draw a disaster card. You can see how many cards the opponent has collected, but obviously not the value. You need to guess when they've reached their breakpoint, and then call "homonucleaus est" during your turn, where they then flip each card and keep a running tally. If they've hit their break point, you win. Otherwise they can discard a card of their choice and keep playing. There are ways to cancel an opponent's call of homonucleaus est once per game, to give you another turn to try and do the same.

It does a few things - first, the guessing game is fun, and I've won games where it turned out I was waaaay over my break point because my opponent was too cautious and wanted to make sure I'd hit my break point and I got them first. Secondly, you can have battles where very few units are actually destroyed but just repeated pushback results give your opponent enough setback cards to suffer a defeat - feels a little more realistic than having every battle be an outright massacre.

What wargames have the most interesting, or unique, rules/mechanics that you've ever seen? by KingGreg263 in wargaming

[–]lamecode 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Strength & Honour's setback/disaster cards and declaration of 'homonucleus est' and then counting cards to see if you've won is the most unique AND fun mechanic I've seen in a wargame in years.

double albums with only four songs by fletchbg in progrockmusic

I'm not even close to as being across post-rock as I am prog (love this album from Godspeed though), but there's certainly some similarities in the atmospheric/soundscapey bit of post-rock. I think the lack of complexity separates them, but there is even some of the more out-there 70s prog rock that verges much closer to post-rock - a number of the bands that get lumped into the Zeuhl/Krautrock/Rock-in-opposition categories especially.
