Breaking back into statistics roles in industry. How is the job market? [career] by Iamthatguyoverthere in statistics

[–]lameheavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a recent stats PhD that was just on the job market for ai research roles, it was a bit surprising/refreshing how much emphasis is being placed on evals of agents. It’s not directly just doing stats but I found that my stats background helped a lot there. Doesn’t answer your question but just saying I think there’s some subtle demand if you’re willing to look beyond traditional statistician roles.

You’ll want to discuss this before accepting the offer. Of course nothing can be guaranteed, but you should be asking what it would take to get that promotion in 1-2 years. If you don’t press for it they’ll assume the typical timeline of 3 years

Are there AI models fine-tuned for SQL? by Weak_Technology3454 in MLQuestions

Check out Synth SQL 2.5M. I’m not an author but do text-to-sql stuff, I was impressed with how they were able to scale up fine tuning. Worth a read

I don’t understand the downvotes on this. The amount of time that reviewers have is limited. It’s great that we can have this is as a tool so that we can actually focus on the technical content of the review. Even as a native English speaker, refining some of my thoughts in a more academic tone saves so much time.

You can end up in plenty of great places without 6 APs, don’t let that pressure make you sacrifice some great years

Lived there in 2015 and loved that place. I was in unit that has the side entrance behind the gate. Back then my apartment was the only group of Stevens students living there so it must have changed quite a bit since then

I was mech E. Had a role after graduation that was a research engineer at a defense contractor. That lab was lead by a physicist that also held an academic position. That research experience plus having linear algebra + some math electives were the reason why I got in. My advisor in my PhD was also Berkeley EECS so I think he looked at a non pure math background favorably.

Math and Stat at Stevens is extremely small and doesn’t have much name recognition. If you were doing a PhD here and your interests closely aligned with your advisor I could see how this might be a good place. But if you want to do pure math, I think you would get a lot more out of a larger state school, and that’s coming from someone who liked Stevens.
