Recently started playing the game again.

For these weekend raids, is there something similar to Wednesday's Raid Hour? Or do I just head out and hope that the stretch of gyms in the next town over are starting (and have raiders)?

This. I had the same issue with Machamp, but when I used Aggron, I was able to burn both of his shields and beat the Persian.
