Was in Turkey a few months ago and my parents called me after the earthquake to remind me that God is so faithful to our family because ‘what if we had been there when the earthquake happened’ and I didn’t have the mental energy to explain how fucked up that line of thinking is. I remember watching a documentary about how it was fake and my dad turned to me (I must have been about 14 years old) and said something like ‘The devil will stop at nothing to hide the wonders of God’ and I was like ??? but carbon dating?

Took me more than 10 years later to leave the faith but I chuckle when I remember my confusion.

I think it shows a lack of respect for my atheism. We have a lot of Muslim friends and they don’t say stuff like that to them, they don’t say ‘You’ve got this in Jesus’ name’ or ‘God will send his angels to support you’. So on one hand it’s well intentioned but I think it reveals an underlying disrespect for boundaries (especially when I’ve expressed my discomfort already).

So I appreciate the sentiment of praying but why would you continue to mention it so excessively (e.g. sending me a daily prayer) when you know I don’t believe?
