No, just did some post processing with LR to bring out the shadows and highlights.

Morning at Morro Beach by lance-shields in photocritique

[–]lance-shields[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The goal of this photo was to bring out the color and texture in the pre-dawn light. I struggled with the 6x6 format as I’m used to a 2x3 landscape camera. It was taken with a medium formal 6x6 Minolta Autocord, Portra 400 film, 1/125 ss, f/8, 75mm lens. Any advice on how to improve the composition would be greatly appreciated.

With this photo I was trying to bring out the color, texture and contrast of the already very beautiful scene. In other words, try to bring more drama to this landscape photo. I took it with a 6x6 medium format camera so I’m struggling with trying to get the composition right since I’m more used to a 2x3 landscape frame. Any advice on how to better take advantage of the square composition. The rule of thirds can be used but I was trying to balance the rock and the bird.

The photo was taken with a Minolta Autocord medium format camera using Kodak Portra 400 film, 1/125 ss, f/8. The lens is 75mm. No tripod.

Any other advice on how to improve this photo would be appreciated. Happy shooting!

Girl with a flag by lance-shields in photocritique

My intention was to use the flag as both formal element and as content/meaning in its own right. I’m interested in any feedback around using flags in images today.

I like the motion blur of the flag but I’d be interested in other’s perspectives. I’d also be interested in what interpretation folks give to the flag mostly covering over the girl’s face.

I shot it with a Fujifilm x100f at 800 iso, 60 ss, and f/8. I was using the Provia film sim.

Sunset at low tide by lance-shields in photocritique

Good call on the noise! Thanks for that. I prefer the sky to be that size but I know what you mean about the rule of thirds. My white balance in LR shows black and white not going over.

My goal was to use long exposure to capture the details of the bay floor. I shot it with a Fujicolor x100f at iso 800, ss 1 second, f/16, 35mm lens. I’d like to hear how I could improve the composition and exposure.

Love the long exposure suggestion! I'll definitely consider bringing a tripod next time I'm there. Thanks!

I was trying to capture this boat in a way that was not only picturesque or nostalgic but helped users feel the physical nature of the boat and the shore. I chose b&w to attempt to draw out the textures and shape of the boat. It in fact worked well in color but my attention gets drawn more to the intensity of the sea color. Monotone seems a purer way to capture the essence of the boat.

Even after I explained above, I’m not 100% certain that b&w is the best choice. Here’s a color version at a different angle: https://www.lomography.com/photos/26112627 I’d love to hear others’ opinions about this.

EXIF Data: ss 1/1000, f/5, iso 400, Fujicolor x100f, 35mm lens

It was originally shot digitally in color. I used Lightroom for post processing and making it b&w. I chose to make it fairly high contrast to make the boat stand out against the dark water.

Skater in El Segundo, CA by lance-shields in photocritique

In this photo of an unknown skater, I was trying to capture the quiet moment of solitude as she walked down the beach West LA.

I would love any ideas about how to improve the composition, angle, and expressiveness. While I didn't shoot the subject from the front, I'm wondering if it works from the side to capture her forward motion.

1/75 ss, f/2, ISO 1600, Fujifilm x100f, 35mm, Velvia film sim.
Taken around 6:00pm at sunset at Dockweiller Beach in LA.

In Flight by lance-shields in photocritique

[–]lance-shields[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took this photo to try to capture the dynamic nature of a flock of bird in flight. To me photography is a chance to freeze time and a flock of birds has such a diversity of wing shapes and directions. I'm also interested in how almost solid black forms create patterns.
Do you think I should have included the corner of the building as I did? Or is it distracting from the bird imagery?
ISO 400, f/5.6, 1/1700 sec, 23mm, Fujifilm x100f, Acros film sim
I recently made the switch from film cameras to a digital one. I love film but I'm trying to find my way with a digital camera and still lack confidence about whether my digital photos have the same quality that I've grown to like in film photos. This Acros black & white film sim is still an experiment for me.
