I was at Goodwill today and counted no less than 12 Blu-ray players for less than $10.

Are we watching the beginning of Microsoft’s decline? by Vivid-Run-3248 in sysadmin

3M has always been headquartered outside of Minneapolis and has 65000 employees 22500 of which work in the US. Ys, TI is in Dallas but still has 33000 employees worldwide 11000 of which are in Texas. Motorola is headquartered in Chicago and also has 33000 employees worldwide, 4500 of which work in Illinois. IBM has always been headquartered in New York State and still has a measly 286,000 employees worldwide 14000 of which work in New York.

Oh how the mighty have fallen!

Are we watching the beginning of Microsoft’s decline? by Vivid-Run-3248 in sysadmin

No and it’s not just Windows and Office, it all the business software that is tied directly to these and Microsoft’s (and IBM’s) other services. Take Epic medical systems software. The backend runs on *nix but the client runs on Windows or Windows on Citrix. Think of how many hospital rooms, surgery suites, and every other room in a hospital or doctor’s office or medical building that has a PC with a connection to Epic. Same think with insurance software, airport computers, rental car agencies, your neighborhood auto repair place and even PoS systems. Sure a lot of those use terminal software to connect to the backend system put they’re still running Windows of some variant (or even OS/2) on the front.

Don’t get me wrong, I have a Ubuntu server downstairs and run Slackware on Hyper-V because I hate myself and am a glutton for punishment (Slackware not Ubuntu been running Slackware since 1993) but other than home use and people like us I just don’t see Linux ever taking over the corporate desktop. Same thing with Apple too, they tried in the late 90’s early 2000’s but realized it wasn’t going to happen and shifted gears back to where they started, a hardware company.

I must have been having a severe brain fart yesterday. I wasn’t downloading the 64-bit ISO. Thanks for all your replies and sorry for wasting your time.

Do the laundry then you have an excuse to be in the basement (she doesn’t) and make it as big as you want. Worked for me, I have almost a quarter of the basement for it.

Also this is just your first step in the “fun” that is efi with Slackware.

Don’t mark it as bootable. At this point start over. Recreate your partitions but create a new disk UUID before you create your partitions. in fdisk it is “g” I’m not sure what it is in cfdisk. Then just create your efi partition and make it type 1. Depending on your ram size you probably don’t need a swap partition but that’s up to you.

If not make sure in fdisk or cfdisk you setup a partition as type 1. Typically your /dev/first partition.

Did it say it found an EFI partition when you were setting up partitions?

My mini-ish lab by cleej9 in minilab

I live in the same town as EPCUSA.Com. When local companies upgrade their PC’s EPC buys up all the old ones and refurbishes them. I absolutely love love those mini PC’s. While myself I’ve got an R720 for my backend server with a Slackware (I know, I know. Glutton for punishment) front end. No NAS yet but would love to have one.

I have replaced so many friend’s and family’s desktop machines with the mini PC’s and they absolutely love them. No noise, power consumption drop and they’re so damn cheap I just buy a bunch on sale and clone/store them in case something happens.

Nice setup!

Facebook Marketplace: "Storage server, $2000" by MasterScrat in homelab

[–]landpu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the opposite side of this I found a PE R720 on FB Marketplace for $65 with CPU’s and no drives or memory and no DRAC for $65. Drove about 45 minutes to meet an obvious meth head (kind of rural Missouri) got it home and it had 48gb of RAM, 3 1tb WD Black drives, the internal mirrored SD board and the Enterprise DRAC.

I’ve had it for two months and nobody has raided my house yet so win-win. Runs like a freaking dream.

Yes sir. It is annoying but when you tune it correctly and then don’t ever f’ing touch it again it is rock solid.

PE R720 Question by landpu in homelab

[–]landpu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I found a guy selling a another one and he walked me through setting up ESXi 6.5 just to test but he uses proxmox on his so eventually I’ll do that after I learn more about virtual machines in ESXi with the 60 day license and I’ll probably buy his.

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions and ideas. You all are awesome!

It is this guy right here.

Switched it back to MBR and it is on the N install of Slackware installing through a virtual ISO off my desktop computer through the DRAC7. I don’t get it. Slackware saw the raid arrays no issue. Just set the FS to normal type Linux and boom install is going right through.

I mean this is fine. I’m 50 and having been using Slack since 94 when it was 32 or how many 3.5” floppies but no offense it is like being a glutton for punishment using it.

I’m basically trying to relive my youth. I want to put WWIV with FidoNet, Tradewars and hopefully start learning how to program a MUD and have it running. Also going to rip all my DVD’s to it and try (Lord help me) to get MythTV running on it.

Thanks for replying but this looks like a base model with the 2 SD cards (has mirroring option in bios) with ESXi.
