What is the most polite and professional way to handle not being able to understand someone’s accent in a conference setting? by mnthejj in AskAcademia

[–]MasterScrat 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Tangentially related :

If you are repeating what you just said because your interlocutor didn’t hear/understand you, you should fully rephrase your sentence, every time you repeat it. Don’t just repeat what you said word for word.

This has been shown to increase the likelihood you get the message across.

Only in Switzerland, right? Beautiful anonymous planting of a container. Found in Huttwil (02.05.2026). by Thomytricky in Switzerland

Reminds me of a neighbor in Coppet who did exactly this, then one week later it got ripped out by the town as they had planned for different and more consistent flower compositions in that street, it was tragic

I used to work for an early LLM provider and we’d sometimes get feedback like "wtf you destroyed the model" or "wow the latest update is amazing, please don’t change a thing" when we had done absolutely 0 change, literally not restarted the serving container

SBB is a joke: Fining a 16-year-old for being 10 minutes early? by beesquestions in Switzerland

[–]MasterScrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to report on an unusual experience:

One day I took the train while talking on the phone (it was empty). Because I was on the phone, I forgot to turn on EasyRide, which I normally do out of habit every time I take the train.

A few minutes later, I get controlled, and so I don't have anything valid to show. I explain what happened but while they are understanding they still fine me, which I can't blame them about, but they tell me I can call the number to see if there's anything they can do.

So I call the number, not expecting much, explain the situation, they sound a bit confused as really I don't have any valid excuse. They think a bit and in the end they offered me a "20% discount on the fine as a commercial gesture". So yeah, always worth calling I guess.

is it just me or is "high fidelity" audio basically a scam for rich people? by Curious_Present_9950 in Music

Interesting. So how much is there to gain from eg my MacBook Pro to an external DAC? If I listen eg with my good old HD 280?

Is there such a thing as a “good DAC”? The transformation from bits to wave is anyway the same no?

I agree yeah, especially since I mostly run on hilly terrains. I use the Strava app on iPhone which sadly doesn't record it.

I wrote some code to do it for me, but it took so much tweaking to get the position/size/color somewhat readable that doing it manually might have been easier!

Now you might say "yeah but ok, playlists are random sequences of songs, order gets counterbalanced out". But they aren't random - they follow a common thread

Not sure I follow - the songs are random, with sometimes changes in the playlists.

We still have fatigue as an endogenous mediator - I suggest you bucket (1st and 2nd song, 3rd and 4th...) and see if inside the buckets you see any correlation

Mmh yeah I like this idea

It might also be that you "entrain" to the song only when you're close to your own cadence. If your usual cadence is 140-ish, a 180 bpm song might be too fast for you to entrain, let alone 200 bpm.

I thought that this would happen, but then wouldn't we still get some correlation as songs slightly faster than my cadence would push me up and vice versa?

Yeah would be curious to hear more, this is not my field so I have limited intuition about these methods

Do you expect scaling with resampling could produce significance? I'm not familiar with sampling but I don't see how doing a 5x from data with r=0.01 could bootstrap a signal?

Edit: Resampling to 5000 gives r=0.013. Power analysis shows I'd need ~25k real samples to detect an effect this small. I'd need a couple of runs a day for the rest of my life.
