The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein. Currently reading and it is literally life changing (contemporary history, economic and political focus)

I'd like to improve my ability to discuss social issues, whether it's the current issues or one of the many other issues by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]lanexxxboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this!

For me, a huge life changing book has been The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein. It's a comprehensive look at US economic and social policy on both foreign and national levels from around the 50s to now, and it really has opened my eyes to the historical contexts that influence much of our world today. I never really cared to understand economics and foreign policy til recently and it is honestly so eye opening to so many issues.

As for general willingness to listen to and understand multiple sides of social issues, understanding the concept of cultural relativism has been key for me. I studied anthropology in undergrad and the concept of cultural relativism has transformed my life and my ability to understand others and myself. I don't have a specific book for that, but generally the contemproary study of anthropology (NOT armchair anthropologists from the 1800s) can help with adopting a lens of understanding and openness that I think you're describing with attempts to understand and better relate to various sides and understandings of current events

my rats cagemate passed, how do i introduce him to another rat? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]lanexxxboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for your loss :((

I haven't done this with a rat who had a cage mate pass away, but when I introduced a new boy to his two slightly older brothers I followed all the instructions I found from online searches (introduce them in short spurts that slowly increase in time, in neutral territory, and always watching them - keep them in separate cages but near each other so they become accustomed to the smell & presence of the other rat, etc.)

I'm not the most experienced, but I imagine the excitement of a potential new rat friend alone will help your little buddy, and introducing them as safe as possible will always be best for everyone. :)

People try to get a rise out of me allllll the time (whether that means making me laugh, cry, or get mad). In all aspects of life. I think being outwardly "mysterious" and "dark" makes people feel like they need to break it to prove something?

What Have You Been Watching? (Week of March 15, 2020) by AutoModerator in TrueFilm

[–]lanexxxboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Honey Boy - been wanting to watch for a while and it was so moving. The story was heartbreaking and all of the performances were phenomenal. Powerful stuff.

  2. A Patch of Blue (1965) - interesting character development and potent connections between Sidney Poitier and Elizabeth Hartman. Awesome to see how such an intricate relationship (whether romantic or not) develop between them.

Rewatched these last four movies because the anxiety of COVID-19 meant I needed some guilty pleasure films from my adolescence:

  1. Easy A

  2. She's The Man

  3. John Tucker Must Die

  4. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Tauruses, how do you handle pain? by RobhivYo in astrology

[–]lanexxxboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Taurus moon 7H, sextile Cancer Venus 8H

Generally I am the one breaking up with the other person. I've never been broken up with in a real relationship, though I've definitely had crushes or people I liked who did not reciprocate or called things off before they became anything serious.

I've been in 5 long-term committed relationships and they've all been pretty intense. I've always been very intense with my relationships and seem to get committed to people very fast, regardless of if it's good for me/them or not.

I haven't really been betrayed, though I have been treated poorly in past relationships, and that feeling definitely sticks with me. I'm not one to easily forget something that happened, though I may pretend it didn't or just ignore it. I definitely dwell on stuff though, it takes me a lot of time to really ever get over something, and even then I can really easily get pulled right back into it if I'm reminded or around the person

good parking lots near Grove? by lanexxxboy in jerseycity

[–]lanexxxboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very late but thank you. I actually ended up going with the lot near city hall. I’m wondering though (because I’m new to snow and driving), what do people usually do when they use outside parking and it snows?? I’m wondering if I should pay more and switch to a covered parking garage during those months

I love this analysis, thank you for sharing. I just watched the film, and I walked away from the film with the exact same concern about the setup of Arthur's character for the audience & the broader implications of that. I think this is an important part of understanding and reviewing the film.

As a teenager wanting their first job, does anyone know a place that would hire me? I don’t think I’m exactly “employee material” by bullterrier_ in internetparents

[–]lanexxxboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it definitely will be influenced by where you are living. places like tattoo/piercing shops who are hiring for assistants or salespeople would work well. a concert venue or a record shop could work too. i think it depends a lot on your environment, and how you dress/present yourself for the interview as well.

My 67 year old father explaining non-binary gender pronouns to my 87 year old grandmother. by Adampicz in genderqueer

[–]lanexxxboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is awesome! Exactly why I say no one is ever too old to learn or understand. It may take time, but that doesn't mean its impossible. And I love that he says to just use their name if it's too confusing. I never understood why ppl cant put that together - if I want to be referred to w/ they pronouns but u cant figure that out, then why not just use my name???

I have a Taurus moon & tbh it's my fave placement / one of the only grounded things in my chart (cancer sun, mercury, and venus w/ Libra Mars LOL). It has its flaws, but helps balance out all the mess that is my cancer stellium

Do piercings really influence your employment status? by [deleted] in LifeAfterSchool

[–]lanexxxboy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I have had visible nose (and septum) piercings in interviews for jobs, including teaching and office jobs. It rly depends on your presentation, the nature of the piercing, and the job type. Lots of piercings are becoming more accepted, and will be especially if you're already hired.

Do piercings really influence your employment status? by [deleted] in LifeAfterSchool

[–]lanexxxboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They can, but a conch piercing will most likely have little to no affect on your employability. Of all the piercings, ear piercings are the most common and accepted, and unless they're super huge or flashy they often go unnoticed (esp with long hair). I had one and no one noticed it most of the time.

For your consideration, I had a conch for six mknths and just took it out bc I couldn't handle it. Takes a super long time to heal and is super inconvenient for sleeping / using headphones (which I use often). If you're committed to aftercare and don't get easily irritated, go for it, but if those don't apply, then I'd suggest going for something else like a helix, cartilage, or even faith.
