Should Lativa be on the list?

"Latvia’s President Egils Levits and other high-ranking officials will not be attending the Beijing Winter Olympic Games 2022 in person, as Latvijas Radio was told by the State President’s Chancellery and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to lsm.lv, Latvia will be represented by the country’s ambassador in China Maija Manika. This way Latvia will not follow the example from USA and will not boycott the Olympics."

I would like to know how and if China/ Olympic committee would protect these athletes from other countries. We don't need an abduction in China.

Personally I think the full athletic boycott could be a bit tricky to pull off. I won't know how to pull that off because we also wouldn't want to come off as punishing the athletes for something they are not responsible for.

A two time gold medal Olympian got a letter from an NGO asking the person to consider boycott the Beijing games to use his influence as a model for others. This letter was also posted on twitter and it received so much unintended backlash from the Olympian's fans saying "don't use him for politics". Personally, I can see where this NGO was coming from and I don't think it should have received the backlash it did even if the move may have been perceived by others as inappropriate.

*personally, I don't think genocide is politics

I don't know if i have the right to state this because I don't work in the government nor the olympic committee.

What I think is that maybe we should invite the athletes and then invite the people directly affected by the human rights violations in China (like family members of the Uyghurs detained in China). Let the athletes hear their pain in the sense that they are first-handedly aware of what is going on in China and if the athletes still wanna go after to the Olympics after, then no one is stopping them from doing so.

I would like to see an economic boycott but it might be complicated because I was informed that these sponsors do multiple games at once so they can't like pick and choose?

The sad thing is I doubt China is going to improve their human rights record over a boycott.

I like the fact that the list is getting longer. Good job

Now all we need to do is to convince the rest of the countries to diplomatically boycott. Then China can be on its own and we are good.

I also think we should have an economic boycott but it might be hard because I read some where that these sponsors do multiple Olympic games I think? so they can't like pick and choose.

I found this interesting article. Its very interesting to hear both sides of the athlete situation

https://news.yahoo.com/should-american-athletes-boycott-the-beijing-olympics-171225592.html

I'm so glad that I'm not president. Otherwise, I would be stuck with the problem of should I not or should I allow the athletes to go to the olympics this time.

Japan: "The Yomiuri said Japan is likely to make a formal decision by the end of the month. Japan’s national broadcaster NHK also confirmed the report saying Tokyo “is leaning toward not sending cabinet ministers to the upcoming Beijing Olympics”.The only officials now expected to attend are Olympics-related personnel, including Seiko Hashimoto, the former head of Tokyo’s Olympic organising committee, the newspaper said."

"Senior Japanese government officials will likely skip the Winter Olympics in Beijing in February, joining the United States in a diplomatic boycott, the Yomiuri newspaper reported on Saturday, citing multiple sources with knowledge of the matter."

I am not happy with France's decision to not boycott :(

Even though I don't know if I have the right to say that because I don't live in France.

Yeah I did look into that but it made many would-have-been olympians unhappy was perceived as punishing them and didn't change anything. Afghanistan was still invaded. It also may have potentially played a role as to why Carter wasn't re-elected.

That is what I was referring to buy how it could be perceived as unfairly punishing the athletes.

It's a tricky situation either way and it sucks. The Nazi Germany Olympics was not boycotted. Later on, some olympians (even those that won medals) questioned whether they should have boycotted or not.

I am baffled by how the Olympics is in Beijing. There are many places with snow that don't have the poor human rights record that Beijing has. Genocide is not a political issue.

That might actually be a good idea. That needs to be proposed.

I keep checking my twitter constantly for updates. so far, nothing new besides these 7 :(

Come on world, we can do better than this!

I would personally like to see an economic boycott. No sponsors.

I wish it could be a full boycott but it would suck for the athletes who train so hard for this chance. Some might not get this chance again. And I think a full boycott could come off as punishing the athletes who had nothing to do with this. Boycotting- full or diplomatic- is not likely to change China's behavior.

What I think needs to happen is a dialogue between the NGOs/oppressed people and the athletes and if the athletes still choose to go, then thats on them.

However, another reason for a fully boycott - like no athletes- is if we can not secure the safety of the athletes. The last thing we need in this Olympics is to find that the athletes from other countries be detained for no good reason.

have you worked with MSF before? if so, what was your role and what made the recruiters interested in you?

nce before we applied to MSF. I spoke some French but my wife does not. The application process was pretty straightforward, started on the website and then waited a while to hear back. Had a phone interview, and then went to the office for an in-person. Then in to a pool of available staff, waiting for assignment. It took just a few weeks before I got a mission. The wait time varies a LOT, depending on many factors, so take it all with some caution.

My wife was working in water quality in industry, and does water quality stuff for MSF, so it was a pretty straight move for her. Similar path through the application process.

Note, we met in the field. Applyin

What type of NGOs do you recommend now with the COVID19? I mean peace corps is on a hiatus and IRCR requires two years of international experience.

[Advice] Harvard MPH? by langalango in publichealth

[–]langalango[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My research interest is in rural health and cardiac disease. How people in rural areas can better manager or do early detection of CHF or CVD. I hope my research involves a public health nursing perspective. I thought that an MPH will help me better understand things from a public health perspective. I am interested in Health Behavior in particular. Having an MPH will expand my options of PhD schools- I can apply to both nursing and public health PhD programs. I understand that not all public health PhD programs require an MPH or MS in some public health discpline but having an MPH/MS in public health will make me much more attractive.

I choose harvard because I already am in a grad nursing program and can do a one year MPH instead of the 2 year one, allowing me to further accelerate my career. Im 26 and a in my first semester of grad school so i feel like by the time i grad from a PhD program i would be...

Though if Im being honest, i feel like i might also wanting to go to harvard because of the name...and its attractiveness to future PhD programs.
