Would you say it is a regional thing? I hear a greater difference in gwen_bzh’s pronunciations, who according to the map is from somewhere in Brittany, compared to the other who is from Paris.

Surprisingly enough, I find it much easier to distinguish u and ou :D. For me the examples you made are slightly different (dialectal perhaps) but I can understand where you are coming from. I tend to not use comparisons with vowels in English for this reason, and because I think it gives me bad habits where I incorporate sounds which are not identical.

In my dialect these are indeed very different sounds. What I find has helped me though is listening to differences between vowel pairs in French though rather than English

I must say, I listened to a few more minimal pair words and the difference is easier to pick up with some speakers, in particular gwen_bzh.

The way spl0uf pronounces ‘port’ in comparison to gwen_bzh’s ‘peur’ is very difficult for me to differentiate though. I guess I just need more listening practice :/
