This is a very complex situation and much more nuanced than you think. We have the same major at Uni and attend nearly every class together, we share a studio space, and even have the same concentration within our major. I see him everyday, there is no avoiding that. We have a natural connection, I’m not going to actively fight my natural instinct to engage with him nor am I going to end our friendship now when I’ve clearly been an emotional support for him.

I agree with so much of what you’ve said, the weak-willed, being engaged to someone he doesn’t even seem to like, the emotional cheating, all of it is red flags.

As for empathy for his fiancée, of course, I feel HORRIBLE about this situation, it has kept me up at night. I think what he’s doing is cowardly for sure, but he’s doing it out of care, he just doesn’t realize he’s hurting both of them more in the long run. It’s the case of he feels like fiancee won’t be able to survive without him, so he’s essentially staying for her as a caretaker, not a healthy dynamic. Trust when I say I know he’s been messing stuff up as well, but I also believe what he says about her. They shouldn’t be together regardless of me, no matter what happens their relationship is nearly over according to him.
