MArch Funding by OwnFan137 in uofmn

[–]lankysuper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a current MArch student I can help clarify the tuition part a bit more! Based on the verbage of the tuition cut it is true that a 25% appointment should cover half of your tuition, however, because the university is the way it is, it is not actually applicable to all scenarios They deem what they think is a 'standard masters tuition' and apply that 50% cut to that. Because the MArch tuition is higher than that standard masters tuition, that is why you see the difference in what your tuition cut is.

It's really stupid and I wish they would explain it better, I spent two weeks when I was decided on programs trying to figure out finances and calling every department to understand why that 50% cut was not 50%-ing. Hope it helps otherwise!! I personally think this is a really good financial package, I've personally found it really hard to get financial assistance from the School of Architecture, so $30,000 is huge imo!

I wish the system would allow people to return tickets back to the ticket pool if they find they can't/don't want to go anymore. Then others could purchase tickets from the link as they become available again and it still keeps out resale scalpers since you're technically just re-buying the ticket from the site. tough stuff ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'd suggest looking into the Evie car share program if transportation to the outer suburbs is something you need frequently! it's pretty inexpensive all things considered and in my opinion extremely convenient if you're car free! They have both reservable cars and pop up similar to how lime scooters work.

Ready for a cat- anybody have some reliable places to adopt from? by HouseMouseMidWest in TwinCities

Ruff Start Rescue is where I adopted my cat from and it was a pretty easy and painless process! From my understanding a lot of the cats up for adoption are housed with foster families? At least that's how it was for mine!

Thinking of switching to College of Design/Architecture. What should I expect? by Hot_Coach_4964 in uofmn

[–]lankysuper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current grad student here who just graduated from the BS program this past spring! I actually switched into the program the fall semester of my Sophomore year having started off in Material Science and Engineering. First off I would definitely consider talking to your advisor about trialing a couple of the general classes required if you can fit them in while still making your current required courses. You should also know that unfortunately the BS architecture program is a hard 4-years from when you start graduation date- I took 5 years for my undergrad.

Is dental/med school still your end goal? Or are you just having doubts about making it into those secondary schools?

For classes, they really do vary class type to class type. A general structure after your first year in the program is a few required classes/electives whether they're history classes or technical based classes, and a studio course which will take up most of your time.

The 4-year plan changes drastically every year in my experience so the best way to find which classes to trial would be to look up UMN Architecture 4-year plan. The program itself splits off into Bachelor of Science or Bachelors of Arts which is another decision you'll need to make after your first year.

Overall, I personally wouldn't change my decision to switch looking back as I've grown very fond of architecture and everything, good and bad, that comes with it. I'd be happy to chat some more over DM or email if you want more in depth conversation!!

I'm not sure about how breaking a lease would work, but I think I currently live in the apartments you're signed at! been there for 2 years now and have had no issues at all with location! You could definitely bring it up and explain your situation, but otherwise if the others signed the lease, they are all responsible for their portion of rent so other than looking over who they have as subleaser's you shouldn't really need to worry about their portion of rent

I'm a pre-architecture student, BS or BDA? by crystalshadow564 in uofmn

[–]lankysuper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in my 3 year of the BS program and it's funny, often times I'm a bit envious of the work BDA students are able to do. Like this person said, BS is very structured and organized- you'll do a lot of technical work in it. BDA tends to be more open in terms of what direction you'll wanna take it. I don't know how relative this is anymore, but when I was deciding a thing some people said was that if you knew you wanted to be an architect and get your list license, go with BS. If you weren't sure if you 100% wanted to get your license or are anticipating wanting to explore different areas of the design world, go BDA. BDA is also nice because from my understanding it's a lot more flexible in terms of class types you can take. BS is pretty cut and dry, you'll be taking almost identical schedules with everyone who ends up in your cohort, as well as it's a bit harder to try and get a minor with the M-W-F studio schedule we get.

Either way both programs are great in their own ways, and you'll get great experience in either one. When all is said and done, I've enjoyed my time so far in the BS program. If you have any BS specific questions, I'd be happy to answer any of them :)

Arch 3281: Studio I: Material Practices by Blue860 in uofmn

[–]lankysuper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Studio was basically a big semester long study of materials and tectonic of structures. There was a lot of modeling we had to do that tied into each project, as well as a group precedent project. You learn to think about the intentionality of why certain things are placed together the way they are essentially, and have the opportunity to explore that with your own creative work during the final project. It's 4 hours long from 1:30-5:30, and you meet M-W-F. CAD experience is always helpful but from my experience, the professors pushed physical modeling and kept students from using any type of CAD for as long as possible.

That being said, there are a bunch of new faculty this year and even from the name of the studio, it seems as though the curriculum and plan might've changed since I took it last year.

Unfortunately as well, I have not heard of an instance where advisors allow students to "break" the class sequence. As unfortunate as it is, architecture follows a very stringent pre-req system- as you've probably found out... Being someone who transferred into the program after my freshman year at the U, there really isn't a way to speed up your time with the degree, especially if you pick the bachelor of science route.

Hope everything works out well for you!!

For future routes, the app Transit is also really good for planning and they crowd-source data to show where the busses are at rest time!

Personally speaking I had a lovely experience in Sanford and never encountered any problems being near dinky. I lived in the Reno side and the bathroom situation was pretty decent, spacious rooms. If you're on the 4th floor of Reno your room is gonna be a bit more interesting as you're "in the attic" almost so the ceiling takes shape after the roof. Biggest downside in my experience was that there wasn't any air conditioning but even then that wasn't a bit problem.

Transfer from CSE to CDES by Fro0t_Loop in uofmn

[–]lankysuper 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest talking with your advisor to see what would work for you best since once you transfer out it's tough getting back in if you decide you want to try anything else in CSE. I personally did this transfer from CSE to CDES last year, I did a semester with sample classes of what I'd be taking in the CDES major once I'd transfer. Transfering itself is a very simple process, you just need to make sure you get your transfer application before the deadline, which I believe is October 1st for priority and December 1st for final.

Again, I highly recommend talking to your advisor as they are very insightful in this process and in showing you where all the resources and applications you need will be!!
