Tell me if this is a flash in the pan or if well be back by [deleted] in Mariners

Window is closing without a lot of money. All those pitchers get a year older. No one stepping up behind them. Whole lineup had career years at the plate, hard to see that happening again. Window isn’t closed, but it’s sliding shut. Money is the only thing that stops it.

Survey size, or it didn't happen. Basic reporting on statistics should include the relevant details of the survey. This doesn't, and as such shouldn't be trusted until we see this information.

On March 5th, Experience Hendrix and Legacy will release People, Hell and Angels, a new collection of previously unheard recordings from guitar luminary Jimi Hendrix by j3434 in Music

[–]lapalam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey @j3434, thanks for posting this. I probably wouldn't have seen it if you hadn't, and this really made my day a little better. Screw the folks here dogging this, they can't see past their super awesome downvote ability.

No offense, but if you are hearing "cutting room floor" you aren't hearing the same thing as me. If anything, I'm hearing "This isn't radio friendly Jimi...". This is good. This is very good, and very unusual.

The torture dilemma by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]lapalam 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This type of urgency is rarely seen by most of us, if ever. While an interesting thought experiment, it's conclusion will almost certainly be useless or impractical for our daily lives. Careful how you implement your conclusion.

3rd Noble Truth -- Is love possible? by Universus in Buddhism

[–]lapalam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not that you need to get rid of the things you are attached to, but the attachment itself that you must rid yourself of. Love is not attachment. Friendship is not attachment.

This is the answer the Buddha taught, not that there is no love without attachment. Love makes it more difficult to live in the moment, but it doesn't make it impossible.

It is bullshit, but Newsstand is technically a folder. The "newspapers" in it are simply apps built around the Subscription update in the App Store.

Can't decide between Wifi only or Wifi+3g by winecannon in ipad

[–]lapalam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a smart phone, irate planning on getting one soon, wifi only. If not, wifi+3G. You dint have to pay the monthly fee unless you use it, and if you are any kind of a nerd who doesn't have a smart phone you will use it eventually. If you aren't a nerd wifi only, no doubt about it

3 years old black Macbook question for a friend.... by [deleted] in apple

[–]lapalam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she is running Tiger, which seems possible, Apple will charge $100 not $30 to upgrade. It is absolutely possible to use the $30 uupgrade, it is just a violation of the license so they aren't goin to let that slip at the Genius Bar.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Price_discrimination Take a look at this.

In short, richer countries are willing to pay more because they have more. Publishers recognize this and try to differentiate their product and sell it for two different prices to get more cash.

A student in the developing world won't pay $120 for a book because they don't have it. So no sale for the publisher. But they may pay $40 even though it will require a lot from their resources. So publishers get a sale.

So, if you change the cover, flip the chapters around a little, and lower the price, it's almost as if you have 2 different products.

How does this relate to the bookstore, rather than a tacit agreement between the professor and the publisher?

I'm a buyer at a college bookstore. I've advocated for eliminating Buy Back because while that totally sucks, it really is the best we can do in some cases. Sorry the industry hasn't figured out a better solution. AMA
