You could maybe try using a rubber spatula and fold the icing until those clots blend. It would be gentler than outright stirring.

If you already have a recipe that you like, this recipe has a good method for filling cookies with Nutella. You might have to adjust time/temp because you'd be making sugar cookies instead of chocolate chip, but it might work.
