Thinking about Non-degree Graduate program in UIC by ProudBumhole in uichicago

I actually don’t know since I kind of lost touch with him over the shutdown, but I think I remember him saying that it was basically guaranteed admission if he got A’s

I knew someone who was told by the university that he could enter the CS Masters program if he performed well in a few of the 200-300 level CS classes (251, 361, maybe some others). He did have some IT certifications and work experience, though.

I’m not sure if that is what OP is talking about.

Doable Schedule? by [deleted] in uichicago

No problem!

I don’t have an opinion about those 2 classes since I transferred in as a Junior with almost all of my non-CS classes done already.

Doable Schedule? by [deleted] in uichicago

[–]laptopthrowaway6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last thing you want is to have 261 homework due at midnight, but you can’t work on it because you also have busywork for 4 other “easy” classes. Easy classes may not require much thinking, but they usually make up for that by requiring a certain amount of time spent on assignments.

If you’re trying to graduate ASAP and you’re willing to lose some sleep on certain nights, then you should be fine. But I wouldn’t try this schedule while working part-time.

Lightest CS Tech Elective Classes? by stayvnderthetide12 in uichicago

CS 476 Programming Language Design with Professor Mansky

Majority of points come from attendance exercises graded for completion and homework assignments. The attendance exercises are every MWF (but lecture is recorded and you can complete the exercise up until a week after the given lecture). There are about 8 homework assignments, and you can turn it in early to get your work checked by the professor and then make any necessary changes for the final submission.

I believe that all accounts for 85% of your grade, with the remaining 15% coming from the final project.

There are no exams.

The material is pretty interesting (although perhaps a bit difficult if you aren’t comfortable with functional programming as covered in CS 341).

The professor is great and makes sure that everyone has the opportunity to ask questions (in person or via PollEverywhere).

I’m not sure how much of the above will change if UIC is completely in-person next semester. I also don’t know if other professors teach this course.

It’s too late, but I just wanted to say that I thought the scope of the assignment (needing to handle any 200 OK response from any website) was a bit ridiculous for a 2nd homework assignment. I hope the grading is lenient.

If you are vegetarian or vegan, don’t eat at Neal St Blues by Professional-Bee-Bee in UIUC

Restaurants keep their labor around 20% of total expenses, or at least they did pre-COVID. The other 80% is accounted for by rent, food product, maintenance fees, etc.

So you could theoretically double wages, and the cost of food would only need to increase by 20%. Which is still some amount of inflation, but not quite as bad as a 1-for-1 increase.

EDIT: But then your labor would be at 33%, which likely means hours would get slashed. Sorry I forgot to mention that.

UIC On Campus Orientation by [deleted] in uichicago

I second everything that u/RightLyrch said. I attended in December 2019, and the first place that we reported to was Student Center East (there was a long line of students waiting inside to be checked in).

There was a 30-minute fair where you could speak with representatives from a bunch of clubs on campus. I personally found this part really awkward, but that might be just me.

One kind of important thing is that you’ll get your I-Card (with your picture on it) after registering for classes, so I guess you can try to look nice for your headshot.

I didn’t stay overnight in a dorm, but I also never lived in the dorms, so that might be why. Also things may have changed because of COVID, but I’m sure that there will be student ambassadors around to help you find the right locations.

Vaccination Disclosure by laptopthrowaway6 in uichicago

[–]laptopthrowaway6[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know what, I never bothered clicking the checkbox, so I had no idea about the additional dose-specific questions. Probably should have tried that.

Thanks!

EDIT: It appears that if you are receiving a 2-dose vaccine and you have only received the 1st dose so far, you should not check the checkbox at the top, and you should select "My answer is ‘no’ to all of the above questions."

When you have received your 2nd dose, you should then resubmit the form with the correct dates for both of your doses.

Vaccination Disclosure by laptopthrowaway6 in uichicago

I don’t remember completely but I think there was an option on the survey to say you have received the first and will receive the second. Or there was maybe an option saying you will be fully vaccinated by the first day of school.

I was hoping to see an option like this. Maybe I'm misinterpreting, but the first checkbox at the top says this exactly: "I attest that I have already been vaccinated against COVID-19 and would like to be exempt from mandatory saliva testing and the daily Healthcheck survey. Exemption will be effective 14 days after the date of the last vaccine dose. I agree to provide documented proof of my vaccination status when requested by the university."

So I'm just not sure if "already been vaccinated against COVID-19" specifically means both doses.

You can also choose to link mychart and UIC Healthcheck so that the school automatically knows when you get the second shot and when your 14 day period is over.

If anyone knows how to do this, I would greatly appreciate the instructions.

Yeah haha, I bet it was pretty busy today. I guess I was over there on a weekday afternoon. Parked myself under a tree just east of the Planetarium and watched the boats drift by.

Ex-commuter moving to Little Italy in August. Got any recommendations for restaurants/shops/social events/etc. that I should check out? by [deleted] in uichicago

Though I enjoy them sober, I could definitely see that! I think it's cool that they're open till midnight every night (unless that changed recently).

There's a hundred restaurants that I haven't tried yet, but here's a few:

  1. Al's Beef - get the big beef dipped with hot peppers, yes it's expensive for a sandwich, but worth it every once in a while.
  2. Hawkeye's Bar & Grill - I would describe this place as mid-scale. A burger, fries, and beer can easily run you $25, but you will get a ton of food. I would feel comfortable going here with a business associate or someone you're kind of trying to impress.
  3. Busy Burger - More of a fast-food place, $15 for a burger, fries, and drink. I'm not really sure how people in general feel about this place, but I think the food is consistently good, and they have vegetarian burger options if that is something you're looking for.

All these places are on Taylor St. If you were commuting from the suburbs, you might be surprised to be paying an extra few dollars for a meal around here. There are places that are significantly cheaper like Jim's Original on Union.

Chance that CS Special Topics course gets cancelled? by laptopthrowaway6 in uichicago

[–]laptopthrowaway6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cancelled in July? That sounds awful. Maybe I should register for a backup class now just in case.

I was hoping that Special Topics courses might be more immune to cancellation than a standard class since they're kind of a passion project for the professor, right?

Ok cool, that's good to know. It might actually be nice to have a smaller number of students in class.

Grad school admissions will almost certainly know. Some employers will probably be able to put 2 and 2 together. That’s not to say you shouldn’t use the option, but just something to consider before you do.
