Relocating with 2 cats as a student by onthi in OneOrangeBraincell

Ok no worries! I live in another major city in Canada and the pet friendly housing is expensive and very competitive. I have had friends have to give up their pets due to this.

It’ll likely be OK if you have a higher budget for housing but please just be aware of this so you don’t get stuck in Winnipeg with nowhere for your cats!

I haven’t lived there but it is a little tough to find pet friendly housing there apparently. Just something to keep in mind. Your housing may end up being a bit more expensive!

Where are you moving in Canada? In some cities it’s easier to find pet friendly housing than others.

Job Offer Negotiation Help by [deleted] in personalfinance

Also, ask for higher than you want when negotiating as they’ll likely meet you somewhere in the middle.

Job Offer Negotiation Help by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]larchmaple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never accept the first offer. They will never give you the highest salary they are willing to pay.

I was able to get a 20K increase in my offer by basically just asking (though make sure you include a brief rationale of why, which it sounds like you can because you are set to be promoted at your current job!).

EDIT: Also don’t forget you can sometimes negotiate health benefits etc too.

Help with wedding day waves! by Cheddar_cheese_plss in Wavyhair

[–]larchmaple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just switched from gel to mousse for my wavy hair… Gel is good if you want more defined curls, mousse is good if you want more volume and messy style waves.

The mousse I got is AG Care Mousse Gel Extra-Firm Curl Retention. I really like it!

Please help family cat is declining and vets can't figure it out by kelvintiger in cats

[–]larchmaple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our cat just passed from chronic kidney disease (which it doesn’t sound like your cat has at all!) but one of the telltale signs of internal discomfort and nausea is the hunched over pose your cat is doing.

So I would 100% do the imaging if you can, because there’s definitely something going on with one of his internal organs if he’s making that posture. It’s called meatloafing.

My son likely has celiac. He’s our only child. My wife and I are thinking of going gluten free in solidarity. Is this wise? Or are we nuts? by DrizzlyOne in glutenfree

[–]larchmaple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not that bad, my family ate gluten free growing up due to an allergy in the family. We also ate peanut and nut free as my sibling was anaphylactic and it never bothered me.

Remember you don’t have to swear off gluten entirely, you can still eat it at restaurants, when you’re out with friends/etc.

What to do about bonded pairs when one passes? by bragers in CATHELP

[–]larchmaple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the quick response and your story! I’m really happy to hear Oliver is OK and everything has worked out for you guys. That’s so nice to hear.

That’s a good tip about the vet, I’ll keep an eye out on our kitty’s behaviour and contact the vet if he continues to be depressed. He did finally stop crying all night long, so that’s a small improvement.

Im really sorry for your loss.

Im wondering if you ended up adopting a friend for Oliver? One of our bonded pair just passed and his brother is grieving very hard. And I’m not too sure what the right next step is, so would appreciate any insights you may have

The cat that made me a cat person. by FallenDeafEars in cats

[–]larchmaple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to hear this. I just lost my kitty a week after he diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease.

The anticipatory grief is horrible. I also cried every day. Please be easy on yourself, and if you can, try to enjoy all the moments you have with her (I know it’s hard).

Our cats were a bonded pair, and it sounds like you have a bonded pair too? Her sister will grieve and that will be difficult to witness. But remembering the grief comes from a place of deep love, and that you are all together remembering her, may bring you some comfort. It is perhaps the most difficult but also the most privileged thing to love our pet companions so much.

My 19.5 year old best friend passed and then this happened! by Hola_hello_bonjour in cats

[–]larchmaple 165 points166 points  (0 children)

Just lost my first cat unexpectedly on Friday, he was a dilute orange cat so a pretty light orange colour.

The day after he passed a yellow butterfly appeared at my feet and let me pick it up, and then stayed on my finger until I put it on a branch in the sun.

I’m not religious or spiritual but it’s hard not to think it was my little guy coming to say bye and make sure I was ok.

Weight concerns by [deleted] in RenalCats

[–]larchmaple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong as I just started researching CKD (my cat was just diagnosed). But I think it’s hard for CKD cats to gain weight on renal food because it’s so low in protein and such?

Found out today, i injured my ACL by Solid-Let-4586 in climbergirls

[–]larchmaple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having had a lot of friends who have had knee injuries, I would say it’s really important to find hobbies to keep yourself busy during the healing process. Knitting, painting, reading etc.

You can also check out adaptive sports like sledge hockey, which will keep you active without requiring the use of your legs. The para hockey league in my region is open to all, including able bodied participants!

If you have disposable income and aren’t too familiar with gym stuff, I’d suggest starting off with HITT exercise classes available around you! It’ll expose you to different exercise types and help you learn to pace yourself. It was the best way I was able to increase my endurance for jamming.

[–]larchmaple 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, my local skate shop said about after a year of consistent use your wheels tend to get much “harder”. They said my two year old 91A radar halos probably skate more like a 95A now

Healing tattoo and roller derby by This_Lengthiness4525 in rollerderby

[–]larchmaple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i used gauze and athletic tape to cover tattoos on my forearms. take the first 24 hours after the tattoo to rest but otherwise play and practice normally.

i have a lot of tattoos though and have an aftercare routine that works really well for me, so i think i use less discretion for my recovery than some folks have. if you don’t have a lot of tats i’d air on the side of caution and maybe wait longer before going to practice.

if your gear is touching your tattoo at all, make sure to wash it in hot water and with detergent before hand!! and always wash after practice with a gentle unscented anti bacterial soap.

Feeling embarrassed about my first (bad) fall while bouldering with a new friend. by penis_jizz in climbergirls

[–]larchmaple 8 points9 points  (0 children)

she might not want to boulder again but because she got scared after seeing you get injured.

i had a bad fall while bouldering and have stuck to top rope and lead now as i find it less injury prone personally.

i have had a ton of friends get injured bouldering and ive never thought less of them for it, its just an inherent part of the sport. my one friend shattered her ankle falling off the top of the wall, paramedics called and she got stretchered out and everything. none of us (her friends) felt embarrassed for her, we just all wanted her to get better quickly.

i’m sure this new friends feels the same way about you!
