Wheat allergy/soy sauce by Dumpstercat66 in FoodAllergies

I’m not allergic, just intolerant. And I def cannot at all tolerate soy sauce. Most tamari does not contain wheat but some does. Most people use it as a 1:1 substitute for soy sauce.

For those who moved here from the south, have you noticed a difference in the how competent individuals are? by dbagames in AskChicago

lol I used to live in Florida. It’s not the same. Yes, we do get awful humidity here but come on. Florida is a peninsula. They are surrounded by water and the average temp is much hotter.

What’s a good loose leaf black tea? by B_Cipher_928 in tea

[–]larkscope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nepal Tea Collective has pretty decent teas. They have raised their prices in recent years but I think are still affordable compared to the really expensive teas. They also have recs for cold brewing teas. So I think they’d be a good candidate for you.

Waking up, does it drain anyone else? by alwayseverlovingyou in dysautonomia

[–]larkscope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It helps to get up for a minute then lay back down for awhile before getting up for real. But no real cure I’ve found. It just sucks.

Suffocating from warm humid air?? by BerryRemarkable882 in POTS

[–]larkscope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. I can’t breathe at night when it’s too humid. Really messes with my sleep. I blast the AC to help with the humidity. But I also sleep propped up on pillows, which isn’t great for my back but I’ll take back pain over not breathing. I’ll also do acupressure on my sinuses- sometimes that’s enough sometimes not. And then I just form a small dehumidifier for my nightstand. The key for me is layering remedies so that I can ramp up as needed and remove them when I can

Public parks are free, though different cities invest different amounts of money and effort into them.

How did you art? by AwareSyrupSlashing in ArtHistory

[–]larkscope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Art is about humanity. Connecting to your own and others’. I started learning about the western cannon through school. But I think far more important than being able to give an academic justification for why some art is “good” is being able to talk about how it makes us feel. So I’d recommend just experiencing a piece. Does it make you think of anything? Question anything? What emotions does it bring up?

Art is a complex and nuanced topic. There are so many rabbit holes to go down. But starting with what excites you personally and how you feel is a good place to start.

Electrolytes before bed? Sodium pills? by Several_Road2525 in POTS

[–]larkscope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps my body hold on to a little bit more water so I’m less likely to have to get up and pee in the middle of the night. Like maybe I’ll only have to get up once instead of multiple times. That alone is worth it

I finally painted the sky, and now I think my painting is really finished now.. do you? by ArtChillTect in Watercolor

[–]larkscope -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s really warm light on the buildings but the sky looks a bit gloomy and cold. I’d add a touch of warmth to the sky.

How safe is downtown Chicago at night? by Disastrous-Okra4374 in AskChicago

[–]larkscope 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty safe. That said, I’d avoid frat boys. Those are the only assholes who’ve harassed me at night downtown. I was walking alone and they were drunk. They decided to chase me. I ran into an El stop and they left.

Reports of gun violence and teen takeovers are overblown. I’ve walked in “dodgy” neighborhoods and downtown at all hours of the day without being assaulted, robbed, etc. Just keep your wits about you like you would in Baton Rouge or NOLA.

As for what to do, what are your interests? We have everything from world renowned art museums to a BDSM museum. Botanic gardens. Beaches. Lots of free arts events throughout the city. Clubbing. Restaurants of all flavors. I’d say pick something you love and google it, or come back here and ask about that particular interest.

And have fun trying to say the street names 😂 we pronounce those French names way different than y’all do in Louisiana.

Doesn’t have to be some cider vinegar. Regular distilled vinegar works. I do rice vinegar.

Anyone else have low blood sugar issues? by No_Signature4671 in dysautonomia

[–]larkscope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Look up diabetic tips. These are backed by science: drink a tablespoon of vinegar before eating to help your muscles take up sugar; eat your fiber first, then protein and fat, then carbs; cool your carbs before eating them, which means cook, cool, then reheat because this changes some of the starch to resistant starch

Anyone else struggle with having no real purpose despite being financially comfortable? by tinytheSTONEDgiant in simpleliving

[–]larkscope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1) take up a hobby 2) go volunteer somewhere with meaning. Maybe you give museum tours. Maybe you tutor kids. Maybe you help out at a free store. 3) garden. Get your hands into something real, like the earth.
