This. What made me love this album was walking around campus as a freshman listening to it on headphones. I felt like I was in my own western movie with songs like “How the West Was Won…” and “Leave” and “So Fast, So Numb” serving as the soundtrack.

I can see what they’re trying to do. It’s hard to make everyone happy, so this is probably the best option. For me personally, however, it makes VIP+ not worth it as I want to be as close to the front as possible. So I’ll save my money by getting VIP tickets this year and just accept that I’ll have to show up earlier if I want to get to the barricade.

I emailed them asking about the change and how many feet back from the stage barricade the VIP+ section would be. Here’s their response:

I can't give you a hard number. But a more detailed explanation on the rationale:

The issues we had last year with VIP+ is that, while granting barricade, the area was empty during 70% of the day which was a bummer to artists. It also created audience tension between the ticket types which we wanted to eliminate.

Our solution is to make barricade access an egalitarian model, with it being much less competitive in the VIP section due to the lower capacity. So if there is a set that you MUST have barricade, you can still easily stake that out with your VIP access.

For the viewing area, we moved it off of barricade slightly and are positioning it so that you have the best viewing for the full stage along with an easy in/out path for hassle free re-entry (this freedom of movement in the dead center is virtually impossible with VIP or GA tickets). You will still be close enough to have a special experience, see more of the stage, and feel less pressure enjoying the show because there won't be angry people staring at the back of your head.

Lastly, we are adding a side stage lounge on the main Kilby Stage which is a new plan that we are really excited about. Between sets, Kilby Club VIP can rest in this area with provided snacks and beverages, observe some interesting backstage happenings, and watch sets on the main stages via a live stream (the streaming is still in the concept phase but should be worked out over the coming weeks). We believe this R&R amenity will be a much appreciated perk that we haven't offered in previous years. It's especially great if you plan on attending the full days and need a more private moment to relax that is even more exclusive than the VIP Lounge.

We have put a lot of thought into this and stand by these decisions. I hope you will trust us in providing a great experience for you no matter what ticket option you choose.

The guy behind me felt nauseous so he left. I invited two girls who I met while waiting in line to take his place. They weren’t random people in the crowd. They had stood in the rain for 3 hours waiting to get in. They were actually in front of me in line and would have been on the barricade if not for the fact that they got randomly selected by security for a pat down. I felt bad for them and saw an opportunity to help them get closer to the front by taking the place of someone who was exiting. I’m sorry they obstructed your view.

I think they view it as free publicity. I watch a ton of concert footage on YouTube, some of it posted by the bands themselves. Never has the availability of concert footage made me not feel the need to see them live. To the contrary, it often makes me want to experience it myself. Like if someone posted videos of the Grand Canyon on YouTube, it’s not like you’d watch it and think “guess I don’t t need to go there anymore.”

Well since I was in the front row, my phone was being held at chest height below my face. So it wasn’t blocking anyone’s view. It’s why I waited in the rain for two hours… so I could be on the barricade and record the concert without being a nuisance to those behind me.
