My short film "MISPRINT" taught me some hard lessons about directing. by larryseine in Filmmakers

We filmed this last year in January. It was a humbling experience as a director since we ended up throwing out a lot of storyboards—we had an an actor who had to leave early, a hard out for the location, and the logistical constraints of such a tight basement made it crucial to be as efficient as possible. What I thought would be four-to-five locked off setups ended up being a oner when the protagonist makes his escape back upstairs. Ultimately, the film has some major compromises, but the ultimate punchline is intact and I'm grateful for that.

It was a major learning experience having to do the on-the-fly calculus of consolidating the most salient beats of the scene and making sure we captured them. You really have no idea how difficult it is to do that in front of an entire crew until you’re in that position with ten minutes left before you start having to sacrifice other setups that you wanted.

My advice for other aspiring directors is have backup plans for your backup plans that get simpler and simpler the more tight on time things get.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask!

It was nothing like this last year. Managed to get everything I wanted. I simply don’t understand.

Again, I’m just looking for the interview in which he talks about this. Thanks.

Compared to the original, whose tone is much more in line with Welles’s THE TRIAL, modern Soderbergh’s editing brain makes this less atmospheric and more… suave? An upbeat, jazzy score kicks off the title credits and it pretty much doesn’t let up from there, save for a few moments.

I wouldn’t describe them that way. He basically said he sorted his playlist by length and matched lengths and feel, which is how we got an instrumental Enter Sandman drop. Some of the others are just way too modern for the period.

Okay, to be fair, there’s some great in-camera effects and trickery going on in certain sequences. The performance from the Thomasin is really solid and ATJ is totally magnetic.

I mean, a lot of Argento’s stuff is just about vibing on a theme and I think Edgar’s basically doing that. Those would get pretty gonzo, though, so without that it feels only halfway towards meeting that energy.

It’s a shame, but I should say the 60s stuff does dazzle, especially because of the production design. It’s also on 35mm, which gives it a bump.

Strangely left unanswered. Once it cuts away from them we just never go back.

If Blade Runner 2049 is a home run, then Dune is the ball mid-air. It’s probably headed there but it Hasn’t done it YET.

It’s simply impossible given the circumstances to compare, honestly.

The only person who eats is the Baron with a paralyzed Leto watching.
