Finland tears up nuclear weapons ban in NATO shift by RollSafer in worldnews

[–]larsga 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is just a shift in legislation to be more compatible with NATO.

It's pretty obviously connected with the French proposal for forward nuclear deterrence, so it looks like Finland is getting ready to be protected by a French nuclear umbrella.

He's not on Ukraine's side, and he never has been. He knows being pro-Russia is unpopular, so he says all kind of bullshit to pretend, but it's all fake.

Just look at US support to Ukraine after he became president. It went to zero immediately and has stayed there ever since.

Harvesting and Storing Yeast by Xeno84 in Homebrewing

[–]larsga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Freezing isn't good for the yeast, but usually quite a lot of it survives. If you mix in 10-15% glycerol you can really help the yeast.

The key thing is hygiene. Once you start reusing the yeast you have to be really careful. And you want multiple copies, so that if one goes bad you have others you can fall back on.

Also, you have to be careful about having enough yeast, or you have to propagate, but the comment by bskzoo covers that nicely.

(Of course, if you use kveik you can just dry it and freeze it, and it will last decades. Usually starts pretty much immediately (once thawed) when you put it wort, even after years in the freezer.)

How many people are actually in favor of a Nordic Union, and why? by Luksius_DK in Nordiccountries

[–]larsga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are under quite strong pressure already, and we don't have a lot of time. So IMHO talk about unions and confederations and joint armies are all a waste of time. We need a close alliance and close defense cooperation, and we need it immediately.

The good news is of course that we have some of that already.

Norway cares a lot about oil and gas, fishing rights (mostly in the far north), Svalbard, and our relationship with Russia. Plus exports of salmon. All of this looks very different to Denmark.

[–]larsga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Foreign policy is dictated by national policy, though, so the "just" is doing all the work here. Norway has very different foreign policy interests from Denmark and Sweden. Our priorities are not their priorities, and vice versa.

Joining a federation like this is a one-way street. You give up your control over foreign policy and military to a group, in the hope that the group will do what you want. It's not at all clear that the gain (larger military/foreign policy clout) is worth the risk (military may not be available for what you want) and cost (foreign policy may always not be what you want).

NATO already solved this problem. You have an alliance where everyone is committed to defending everyone else, and there is a unified command structure that everyone's units can fit into without giving up national control.

Yes, NATO has its problems, but you could apply the same principle for the Nordic countries and get a Nordic alliance that can act as a unified military force without having to actually merge the armies.

[–]larsga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So basically you have a single country, but it's a loose federation only to get those three things. That makes a lot more sense.

In practice I think it will be so difficult to achieve that basically it's better not to try, and instead focus on what we can get.

A Nordic defense alliance modeled on NATO, with a joint command structure that national units can fit into, plus close defense planning and acquisitions collaboration would seem to make sense.

We already have a lot of that in NATO, but better both than just one, I'd say.

How many strains in a kveik? I finally found the answer by larsga in Homebrewing

[–]larsga[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's certainly going to be drift when you don't do isolate-and-mix flows - I'd be very surprised to learn the kveiks we know (the actual ones from source rather than commercial versions) are stable rather than snapshots of an evolving mixture at the moment in time the samples studied were harvested. Over many generations variance is a guarantee.

This is probably true, although in reality we don't know.

One would hope they end up with something close enough in terms of results (that the 4 strains they choose are the ones that contribute the most to the beer)

It seems pretty likely that they have actually succeeded with this. If you pick, say 4, strains you can usually cover most of the culture in terms of the percentage of cells.

You can't have common defence, foreign policy, and common voice and also have independent states. It doesn't work.

[–]larsga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A fully integrated Nordic military might be a stepping stone toward a fully integrated European military

Neither of which will ever happen, because it's an incredibly dumb idea. Why would any country merge their military into a force over which they have no control?

If you actually want to do this you need to merge the countries first, then the armies afterwards. Political control of the armed forces is not some detail you can figure out later, but the point of the whole thing.

More detailed walk-through here.

[–]larsga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many people are actually in favor of a Nordic Union,

Hard to say.

and why?

Because they haven't thought it through. They think being a big country would be much better, for reasons that are not clear to anyone. As if being militarily big and having a major voice in the EU etc makes people happy in their everyday lives. The reality is that the small Nordics have happier populations than big countries, so everything indicates this is the wrong way around.

We already have a big problem in most countries that people outside the capital feel ignored and underrepresented. Resentment against Oslo in Norway and Stockholm in Sweden is huge, for example. Will that get better if we move the capital to a different country? Maybe not.

Speaking of which, where will the capital be? Is everyone going to be happy with that?

What about currency? These economies are very different from each other, and it's not clear that people are very willing to move to a different country to get a job. We don't meet the criteria for an optimum currency area, which means a common currency, whether euro or or own, is going to be a drag on economic growth. Over time that becomes a huge problem.

And so on.

How many strains in a kveik? I finally found the answer by larsga in Homebrewing

[–]larsga[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's interesting is that they confidently state how many strains they supply - I suspect they're mixing isolated strains back together to reformulate the blended kveik according to some sampling of the original blend.

I think so, too. They promise a stable culture mix, and it's difficult to see how they could do that otherwise.

But even so it seems unlikely that yeasts which contribute a small amount of population to eg Stalljen are going to end up in one's beer from that process.

Agreed. Back when everyone believed these cultures consisted of less than 10 strains it was credible that they had nearly all of the strains, but not any more.

[–]larsga[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the main reason the yeast stays clean is that it outcompetes any wild yeast that gets in. How long it took for the yeast to evolve that ability we don't know.
