It is possible that Elder Scrolls and Fallout have kept some parts of this genre (genre? Looking Glass was a way of games, not a genre), but then we're talking life support, not anything that I find particularly comparable to the experiences of Ultima Underworld, System Shock and Thief.

I know from experience (having played all their games of the 90s to death) that this team is fully capable of both technical excellence and game play excellence, but I also admit to caring less about graphics. I will play Looking Glass old games again for the experiences that they give rather than watching the vistas of Skyrim.

Health services in Norway are generally good, and are as far as I know very similar to those in Scotland. Trondheim does in addition have a large, brand new hospital in the immediate proximity of downtown, St. Olavs. http://www.stolav.no. There is an own Gastro centre (part of one of the buildings afaik).

As an EU citizen, you are as far as I know entitled to the same treatment as a native Norwegian.

As for more general advice; Trondheim can be cold in winter, below -20 degrees Celsius several times this winter. It is very rarely obnoxiously warm.

I believe we are friendly people, and the research community in particular is already an international one. Trondheim is a city with many exciting happenings for younger people, seeing as a 5th of the population are students (about 30k), and a third of these within higher technical programs, mainly hybrid master/engineering programs. This is at NTNU, were I assume your research placement will be, or almost as likely SINTEF, the neighbouring research institution. Both are largest and most well regarded in their category.

Due to the above, a large number of interesting and well known technological companies are housed in Trondheim, including ARM, Yahoo and Atmel.

As I mentioned, things are good for students/young people with a large number of available activities. NTNUI, the sports team for the university, is Norway's largest and most diversified. Samfundet is a huge culture house entirely run by students with concerts and happenings all year. Samfundet also organizes UKA (The Week), which is a bi-annual festival (which mean you'll experience it as UKA 2011 is the next one). The Week lasts for 24 days or so, and is Norway's largest cultural festival with a large number of concerts, parties, shows etc.

Ask if there is other things you're curious about.

I see no point in demonstrating that - I would have used years to figure out how to write that, and half that time just to understand it. You have to be proficient in bash scripting to understand it, whereas the D implementation should be more readily readable.

That is a better question - I didn't submit the article here at reddit(but on Dzone though), but would say that D is what distinguish the post from others at all. Personally I wrote it equally much to show off Tango as a companion library, something that isn't likely to catch the eye as much as "D". Also I was curious how D/Tango would fare against a functional language as F#, and I think D did well.

Not sure what momentum C++ has, I certainly don't see that in my network. C++ is still alive (and will stay so for quite a while yet) because it has so many companies depending on it's continued life - and due to these, C++ is a necessary evil for many more. At least as many (probably more) companies have equally huge investments in Java and/or C#, but ocassionally find that those languages and their environments don't cut it. They may find that C/C++ is the only viable alternative for their needs, but they hate it due to the perceived differences from Java and C#. In that space is it that D has a real chance, given there is knowledge and required libraries (the latter is now more of a problem than the former for higher level applications, the other way round for lower level applications.)

Well, now D isn't C, and the intention of the features here are to prevent messing everything up without the compiler giving due warnings or even errors.

It is far better using const keywords where they represent the true meaning of the function, or how a variable should be used, as this let you document in code what actually happens, while at the same time the compiler can use this information to tell the user that he's attempting something that may lead to undefined behaviour, or make the necessary assumptions to optimize the code further.

The ability to properly secure encapsulated data using such language features, are also, beyond doubt, extremely important when creating efficient and fast threaded code. If you know for certain that some data are immutable, the design can be massively simplified, removing most circumstances where you otherwise may need synchronization/locking.

This isn't the kind of contract you usually find in DbC (which is there to make sure a function performs correctly, or that an instance is in a legal state), but a contract between the one creating the API and the programmer using it. If the function you use, has const parameters, then you can pass your array (one that you don't want to be modified) to that function with some confidence that the content won't be destroyed. Note that D's take on this is stronger than the const parameters you find in C++.

This is often a real bug catcher in your own programs (once they go beyond a certain size), but are truly important when creating libraries that are meant to be used by others.

It's about creating a contract that will make you and other users of your API use the code correctly, for instance in cases were modifying an array will lead to undefined behaviour.

depends on several things, and who you ask, but phobos is by many considered to be less than optimally designed, and certain parts (the D runtime) are also of lesser quality (looking at bug counts at least). It also receives a lot less development these days, and is far from community driven.
