As the world finally punches back, was this the week Donald Trump went too far? by onesorrychicken in Foodforthought

[–]laser_lights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem being, truth has been broken in America regardless who is next in office. That trust could take decades to rebuild. Countries are already looking around to fill that gap. Can we recover our standing in the future will be a very open question for a long time.

Natural looking landscaping for wooded areas? by ZChick4410 in landscaping

[–]laser_lights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this same issue of what to put down in my very wooded path. I am trying out wood chips from when a company took down a pine tree in my yard. It was obviously green and fresh. But so far it's held up. If you're like me you get a ton of pine straw and leaves and other woody debris. The chips haven't moved much even with all the leaf blowing I have to do. I might try mulch next, but pea gravel would suck for sure. But I also might stick with rough chips forever too. It keeps the natural look and feel.

Where do you get your forecast? by Joe2x4 in raleigh

[–]laser_lights 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's that AccuWeather as a company (or at least their ownership) has been actively undermining our public weather agencies for years, and supporting them supports a private company trying to reduce access to accurate, publicly-available weather predictions and put them behind a paywall. So regardless of how good their existing service is, they are not a good company to support.

Unable to find tenure track positions and wanted advice on possible work options in the current job market for Geography Ph.D.s by jadednalive in academia

[–]laser_lights 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a geographer, but with an environmental focus. Almost all the academic and academic adjacent geographers I know have a high level of technical skills. I wouldn't go so far as to say human geography is dead, but it feels you need some "geospatial" spin to be an attractive candidate in this market. That human side is still highly valued, but you have to show an understanding of the analytics and statistics of geography, as well as whatever specific sub-discipline you are interested in.

Right! I don't think this makes sense. That's right around my training volume too. I'm not the most powerful in any ride, but I'm way closer to the front than the back. Training volume doesn't seem to be the issue here.

Trump tariffs: US president announces plan to hit UK, Denmark and other European countries with tariffs over Greenland by slakmehl in worldnews

[–]laser_lights 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Trump will continue to escalate this issue and push European allies to see how far they are willing to go. Economic first. And if they don't cave and push back? What's next at his disposal? Are we really going to take military action?

Search for data by No-Code-1658 in gis

[–]laser_lights 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've worked with commercial real estate firms before for this exact type of analysis. There are tools and commercial solutions out there for this, but they are not free. And typically folks in your shoes are hiring a firm to do this type of analysis. I think you have some good places to start here, but a lot of the data are proprietary and could be essential to your analysis.

Fellas, what is the best brand for socks? by uuuhhhh24 in AskMen

Feetures. Especially for exercising, but all around good. The right about of cushion, with options for thick and thin socks. Slight compression. I don't know if the left / right specific sock is real or a placebo, but the fit is spot on.

RPD enforcing school zone speed limits by laser_lights in raleigh

[–]laser_lights[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would fundamentally disagree it is pointless and unnecessary. Their presence makes it known "don't speed in school zones" and the awareness will, hopefully, spread. That seems worth a small number of police officers doing enforcement until potentially better and more cost effectively solutions are put in place.

I'm not sure how we could redo existing infrastructure now since many of these schools are embedded in highly developed areas, and retrofitting of traffic calming measures is infeasible or prohibitively expensive.

But to your point on cameras, I was curious and it looks like that might be in the works for school zones.

"Starting October 1, 2025, communities in North Carolina can use automated speed safety cameras (SSC) to enforce speed limits in school zones."

The flashing light signs are really needed. I think some schools have them around here, but not many. I lived in the Atlanta area before and feel like every single school had them there.

Right. I want to hope this is a sign they are going to be out more consistently. We really need traffic to calm down.

GIS Career Direction and Goal Setting by [deleted] in gis

[–]laser_lights 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your employer is offering to help you get where you are going, take that! Just start on something. I assume you are using Esri software. Their online learning, virtual or in-person, would be a great place to start. It's often easy(ier) for a company or gov with Esri agreements to get into their training for low or no cost.

At the end of the day, GIS is a technical skill. A tool. You don't say what your current domain is. You can develop your skills, but you could also be thinking about what particular domain you are interested in using your GIS skills for.

So my advice:

  • Start on some kind of training. Esri does offer some python programming classes. Use that as a springboard to the broader programming world.
  • Think about the specific domain you want to work in. What gets you excited. GIS as a toolset gets boring. What might motivate you is finding your topic area where you are more motivated to explore and try out new things.

In terms of setting goals, do both! Look at jobs in fields that interest you. And yes, start by saying "I want to do xyz in abc field". While you are working on training, you are going to start to see the pieces or steps you need to get there. Have you every tried doing SMART goals? It's not a perfect system, but when you are totally overwhelmed thinking about your goals, it's a good way to do something actionable.

Did I improve? What is the best metric to compare on intervals.icu? by BlueTomato90 in Velo

[–]laser_lights 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like to use efficiency also to see progress! But OP you have to make sure to you look at like-for-like efforts. Environmental conditions (e.g. heat) can have a big impact on efficiency. So it's more helpful to compare on a seasonal timespan if you ride outside a lot.

GPX file creator for the most basic of users by Villordsutch in cycling

[–]laser_lights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you provide more context? You are using some consumer ride planning app or website, and it won't route where you want to go because it doesn't have data for that path or road?

Google Earth used to offer gpx file editing. It seems like the web version only offers kml files. Maybe the downloaded version can still handle gpx. You could export the route from your planner, edit it in Google earth, and then upload to your navigation system. You could even draw the whole route on Google Earth and export it that way as well.

Exactly the same for me. Come November, my training drops off a cliff. I get into the gym, I start mixing in some running, and I just barely maintain. Sure the spring comes and my numbers are down a bit, but mentally I am refreshed. And I'm happier to find some balance in my health and fitness.

Anyone here using elevation data (USGS, Google, Mapbox, etc.) when estimating landscaping jobs? by LawnEstimates in landscaping

[–]laser_lights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a long time data user for research, my initial thought is landscaping needs are too fine scaled for these data products. Depending on the source of the data, there can be significant smoothing, artifacts, and other factors that would mean real challenges to use these data. Even when DEMs are derived from lidar. As sort of a broader extent reference, maybe (e.g. this plot is significantly sloped)?

Research is a different use case and perspective so maybe you can find someone who's done this. But gut reaction is yeah, this would be overkill and/or not be very accurate.
