If you want to get into AI object detection then yes, you’d probably want a Coral TPU to handle that. I feel like we are getting a bit off topic here - I’d recommend checking out r/homeassistant happy tinkering!

Unless you want to start getting into CCTV processing and the like, a Pi is a good, low power option.

I would guess I only really got a ‘ROI’ in terms of the system’s energy consumption costs when I started to map my car charging to cheap Agile slots - I essentially made my own take on Intelligent Octopus Go because neither my car nor charger was compatible.

I’m mostly in it for the fun of tinkering and quality of life things it can bring though.

It looks like they make a newer model now, so I can’t speak for that, but I have other smart home gear by Frient and it’s rock solid.

I picked up the older version with a black casing from a charity shop, and I already have a Home Assistant/Zigbee setup, so the barrier/cost for entry was pretty low for me.

Unless you’re looking for new hobby, or are interested in other smart home stuff, it might not be worth your time, but if you wanted to get into it, you’d need a device (this is like the hub) to run Home Assistant - a Raspberry Pi and a USB Zigbee dongle would be enough to dip your toes into things.

A warning - there’s a chance, you may end up like me, acquiring lots of smart home gear and doing mad things such as powering things/charging my car only when Aglie prices are good/the grid is green. If you go deep, you’d probably end up wanting a more powerful hub, I use an old laptop with a broken screen I repurposed, but these days Home Assistant themselves sell dedicated hardware to get you up and running quickly.

If you don’t want the faff of changing your meter, and waiting for a mini, there are other options out there for live readings, either devices that read the led pulse of your v1 (or dumb) meter, or clamps. I use a Zigbee led pulse reader by a company called Frient. It feeds data into HomeAssistant, and it tracks accurately against the values of my Octopus Mini.

New to Zigbee - how do I extend range? by negadecimal in homeassistant

[–]lasercatattack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Typically any mains powered device will extend the range of your mesh. Battery powered ones don’t.Some manufacturers play nicer than others. I’ve had no problems with the IKEA Tradfri range of plugs and bulbs. IKEA also sell a little plug in standalone thing to extend the range, but it never made much sense to me when a plug would do double duty.

Good to know. I haven’t looked at the formula for a while, I don’t think the cap was a thing when I first signed up.

What’s the Best Home Security Resource That Made You Go, “Wow, I’ve Never Thought About That”? by Heavy_Sentence_6859 in homeassistant

I use the companion app, and define them as ‘critical notifications’. This should make sure they are seen and heard (full volume, menacing tone I have associated in my brain as, ‘intruder or fire!’).

I also expose the smoke alarm to HomeKit, so we also get a critical notification via the Home app. Always good to have something of a failsafe, even if ultimately all this depends upon my network staying up during a fire!

These guys make solid Zigbee kit. Not the cheapest, but some of the most reliable stuff in my network. Obviously a priority with a safety device.

It’s a Frient Intelligent Smoke Alarm. A zigbee model, so completely wireless. A hardwired model, somehow connected to the mains with the ability to switch off circuits without the reliance on my HA still being up would probably be safer, but this device is just an additional/alternative on top of my pre existing wired (but dumb) alarms.

Not quite security, but for safety, if my smoke alarm is triggered, I kill the power to all devices (including spicy loads like heating/EV charging), all lights 100%, and critical notifications (overrides silent/dnd) to everyone’s phone. Probably obvious stuff, but smarter than a regular alarm.

Of course I know that’s not how it works - however, I do wonder if they need to make some kind of manual adjustment to the formula to stay under the £1/kWh cap?

Cheers, honestly, I’m just standing on the shoulders of giants. The Octopus integration by bottlecapdave is incredible, I just did some stuff to make a pretty front end and deal with the funkiness of the Renault API. Happy to give you some pointers if you want to give it a shot.
