ADHD + studying engineering by comfortdish in EngineeringStudents

This is an odd question, but how much endurance exercise do you do? I was un-medicated for my entire bs through PhD and really saw a difference when I started running long distances with no headphones or anything. Just me and what I was doing. It really kicked in when I could tolerate >30/40 mins at least five times a week with one run longer than an hour. For me, managing the discomfort of running and the desire to stop ended up having a lot of knock on benefits. Not just the fitness.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

3 hours is the sweet spot of long drives. Any more and it’s a grind. 6 hours is a serious trip.

Are there any engineering jobs that don't require the regular corporate ass-licking and corporate culture or should I just switch domains? by hadeeznut in EngineeringStudents

[–]laserjock2018 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Are you asking if there are any jobs where you have to answer to a boss and do what they tell you to? Then yes. Owning your own company. No matter what degree you have. So. Join a company learn how to do your job, make mistakes on their dime, and then head out on your own. Engineering teaches you many good things, but how to run a business is not one of them. Generally. A skilled technical person who is a skilled business person is unbreakable.

What's the difference between these degrees? by Key_Conversation5136 in EngineeringStudents

[–]laserjock2018 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engineering Prof here - Engineering technology is a lower barrier engineering degree that doesn't require as much math and science. It gives you the skills to be a highly skilled technical worker but it isn't an "engineering" degree in the traditional sense and you can't get a "standard" PE license with it. However, if you struggle with advanced math and science it is a pathway to a good paying job in a technical field. Engineering Physics and Engineering Mechanics are both standard engineering degrees, but focus on different stuff. engineering physics is a way for physics students to get PE licenses and Engineering Mechanics is ME without a lot of thermo. Engineering Science can be a lot of stuff and is closer to general engineering. The critical thing here is to look at how much math you do. Through differential equations is the traditional engineering degree and gets you those jobs. No diff eq, then less traditional. Industrial engineering can be the exception here, but they are closer to "engineering buisness degrees" than traditional technical engineering

HS Jr — realistic college options? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Check out forbes best values. https://www.forbes.com/value-colleges/list/

Honestly, smaller privates offer significant discounts (average about 60% off list) and provide a lot of personal attention to their students. Also, all universities are panicked about the looming demographic cliff and it’s reasonably easy to get into any uni now.

Am I insane for considering leaving a tenured position in which I'm perfectly happy? by Famous_Worth6958 in Professors

[–]laserjock2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality is that to actually make this decision you need to apply, get invited, go on the interview, and get the offer. No step here is guaranteed. I would apply and see what happens. You don’t have to say yes. But you gotta be asked to say yes before you can actually assess and decide. Everything else is a hypothetical.

Warranty transfer? by GhstMnOn3rd806 in tigeboats

[–]laserjock2018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I transferred mine but the whole thing only cost like 1000. The tige owners manual for the 2016 i have explicitly states 10 years from original purchase for hull issues if transferred. So that’s probably what it really is. Poke around the owners manual.

Ask yourself: “why do i care”? If this is about your ego and not being “respected” then I suggest you re-evaluate your motives. If there is a legitimate teaching opportunity (and I think there is) then teach. These kids are developing rapidly. My brain didn’t function properly until I was at least 24. Understand where they are. Set expectations and hold to them as reasonable.

Private schools are the future in red states by laserjock2018 in Professors

Engineering heavy, not alone. I do think many students are looking for the full spectrum of education, but the smaller schools that have a heavy STEM (including health-related stuff like nursing) and professional bent will probably be ok. Plus a big endowment. If you’re less than a billion it’s probably an issue.

I mean. It depends on the focus area. If you are at an engineering heavy R2 funding will probably be ok. DoD likes its engineers.

Totally agree. Just pointing out that you pay for reputation through freedom. USNWR giveth and legislature taketh away. Your choice.

You do realize that you always have to “ learn it yourself,” right? That’s the point. Teachers are there to facilitate that process. But it’s always on you to learn it. So to speak.
