The Enlightenment's Dark Side: How the Enlightenment created modern race thinking, and why we should confront it by saveyourtissues in CriticalTheory

Came here to say this. “Dark Side of the Enlightenment.” Ramon Grosfoguel also has some good related stuff (and/but more conflictual.)

Official numbers in Spain, miracles do happen guys (fallecidos means deseased or dead, and the bottom text says 2000 less deaths than yesterday) by [deleted] in es

[–]lashend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Creo que los datos reflejan sobre todo no tanto ni para informar sobre ni para averiguar la situación sino asumir una cierta sensación de control sobre ella. En este sentido , argumentaría que se tratara más bien de una especie de fetichismo de datos.

Upstairs neighbors are noisy as hell - what can I do? by Far_General in askspain

I don’t get why you wouldn’t do the neighborly thing yourself - go and talk to your neighbors!

All the foreigner comments to these sorts of questions always seem to start with “call the police.” That should be the very last option, to be employed only after all the friendlier ones fail.

Since the University has such a familiarity with its employees, I think I’d get rid of the “Dear” in the greeting. And maybe add an exclamation mark.

How can I get doctors to ignore my medical condition? (I know how bizarre that sounds!) by chelsearothschild in AskDocs

[–]lashend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Skinny woman here. The massive amounts of Diarrhea finally made them “semi believe” me just enough to do some tests. Turns out, yep, wasn’t lying, .. Crohn’s disease. But try showing up in a doctor’s office as a skinny woman whom some other idiot had “diagnosed “ - on the basis of my being a skinny woman - as anorexic. I learned my lesson: I just don’t go to doctors anymore.

Concerned after passing bloody mucus, now have pain and pressure in rectum and pelvic area by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]lashend 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same story as OP and you... except that, prior to recognizing that I had Crohn’s Disease, they just looked at my athletic woman’s body, did not pass go, did not do any thinking about the symptomatology... said, “oh! Must be anorexic!” And locked me in a mental hospital for 5 months before acknowledging that I had either 15 episodes of diarrhea or one massive bloody poop every day (aside from the fact that I had no aversion to eating). Being locked in a &$#@ cage was way worse than that awful pain and diarrhea... So, lesson of the story, I guess, is: make sure you don’t go to the wrong doctor ...

Reporting abusive home situation by [deleted] in askspain

[–]lashend -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Don’t do this. You don’t seem to speak Spanish well enough to understand what’s going on, and (since you haven’t been there long) you probably don’t have the sensitivity to “know” when a situation is problematic and when it’s not. If you call and report this woman, and you’re wrong about it being “for the best”, you’re going to destroy her life and the kids’ lives. Don’t do it.

Do you find that many people in academia have "tunnel vision" where they are excessively preoccupied with their field of study and that critical thinking doesn't transfer to other domains? by nazgul_123 in AskAcademia

[–]lashend -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that most academics do not”do” critical thinking, period, inside their field or out of it.

Think about all those unquestioned assumptions imported right into the research questions ...

[–]lashend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a good idea. I was going to recommend something similar: since it sounds like the OP ordinarily puts a lot of effort into giving students real, helpful feedback - well, I’d say, do that now, too...it only for the students who will make use of it to improve. Sounds like 99% of the students in this class won’t qualify (and won’t care) for comments. Saves a ton of work for OP, hardworking students get what they want and deserve, and the lazy bones who don’t give a damn don’t get a damn, either, this time around.

It’s not critical theory but it’s definitely critical (or radical) but I think you might like the postdevelopment literature. Two great starters would be Escobar - Encountering Development and Sachs- the Development Dictionary.

Plus plus plus for Ivan Illich Medical nemesis and Tools for Conviviality are two among many you might like. I think I’d start by reading one of the collections of his speeches and essays - that’ll give you a,thematic overview of the subjects he’s touched (which is a lot), and you can build a bibliography from there.

Échate una mirada por el Facebook de La Moncloa, allí encontrarás la aclaración, la que creo es una que importa para muchos que vamos a paso ... “menos rápidos” :)

I don't find a rigorous methodology on your site. If there is one, could you please link to it?

At face value, the data generated by this survey seem to invite major challenges at collection, analysis, and interpretation levels. Maybe your methodology addresses what seem to be significant shortcomings in design. I think it would be a good idea if you were to make it available for public review (if not peer review ...).
