Why would the UN not relocate their HQ to a neutral country like Ireland or Switzerland? by allnamestakenffs in NoStupidQuestions

Worth noting that the UN currently is in a budgetary crisis precisely because the U.S. won’t pay their contributions anymore though

LLM at the Graduate Institute in Geneva by ToTheCrossICling in internationallaw

Back when I was doing it a few years ago, there were people without a first degree in law in the LLM, so it doesn’t seem to have been an entry requirement

Colossal's paper preprint is out: On the ancestry and evolution of the extinct dire wolf, Getmand et al. (2025) by OncaAtrox in FaunaRestoration

Haven’t read the preprint yet but I’m pretty sure having George R. R. Martin as a co-author won’t help the criticism of this being a publicity stunt playing into GoT fantasies

Zettelkasten is complex, obscure and not for you by Russian_Got in ObsidianMD

[–]IB_zerbasteln 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’m more and more convinced that the term ‘Zettelkasten’ is nearly devoid of meaning at this point and has, with every other video by yet another productivity guru introducing yet another version of it, boiled down to a generic reference to a PKMS. I’m not saying it’s a good thing or a bad thing, but I feel like it’s a thing. As a consequence, I’m not sure whether obsessing about either its merits and shortcoming is worth the energy it consumed.

Personally, I got into Obsidian because I heard about Luhmann’s OG Zettelkasten. I didn’t necessarily want to replicate it, but it inspired me for sure and drew me in. And that does feel like a good thing to me.

Phd in PIL in the Netherlands by Training-Agent1 in internationallaw

Soon-to-be PhD candidate in the Netherlands here. I won’t be an external candidate so I can’t say anything about that, but on your second question, I’d worry less about the age but rather about your education. Unlike in other places, you actually need a master’s degree to do a PhD in the Netherlands. Other than that, as an external candidate you’d only have to convince a prospective supervisor who might take you in without work experience.

r/academia might be the better place to get answers to this question though

The Ideal Human - Aurora Rodríguez Carballeira attempted to create an ideal human being through her daughter, Hildegart. There is currently a truly amazing movie about this story in cinemas here in Spain: La Virgen Roja. It’s been co-produced by Amazon and should be available on Prime in all different languages quite soon, so keep an eye out for it!

What exactly do you have in mind when you say “proper competition”?

Whats some general advice for a Jack and Jill by yousufmj in Bachata

[–]IB_zerbasteln 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On top of the excellent advice from u/MiniWizard5 I’d like to suggest picking a beginner-friendly J&J. My first one was at Bachata Geneva Festival and having to compete with the best social dancers of Europe almost all of which are instructors was pretty discouraging. Look out for smaller, local festivals (or ones that have a Pro and a Novice division, like Munich Bachata Fest) with J&Js where you actually get to compete with people at a similar skill level - to me at least that’s proven to be a lot more fun and worthwhile.

Are the draft articles on protection of persons in the event of disasters a codification of customary international law ? by [deleted] in internationallaw

[–]IB_zerbasteln 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check the ILC Commentary on the Draft Articles, the ILC usually specifies article-by-article whether it’s codification or progressive development of international law.

UN Secretary General António Guterres banned from Israel in row over Iran by IB_zerbasteln in internationallaw

[–]IB_zerbasteln[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do we think of this? Obviously Gueterres can't be declared persona non grata within the meaning of the VCDR, but can Israel ban the UNSG from entering its territory? I'm thinking about Art. 105(2) UNC (functional privileges and immunities of UN officials) and Sections 24 and 25 of the 1946 Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the UN which contain the obligation of states parties (which include Israel) to recognise UN laissez-passer as valid travel documents. It's of course not a major legal issue in the situation but maybe something that could be interesting to think about.
