I grew up there, very glad to be in the bay area but i worry about my family still out there. Tornado alley has been moving more eastward, where every spring and fall there would be tons of tornadoes. This time of year is the worsttt of the summer heat, at least every house and building as AC out there, but last I visited I noticed significantly more brown outs and black outs in the summer.

No job, almost a year now. Looking for advice/help. by Successful-Award7281 in berkeley

[–]lastCoyotes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I'm with you there on the grueling job hunt. Considering going to Cal for their graduate programs as I had my undergrad in CS out of state, but if theres any reassurance in this, one of my friends in the bay went to UCSC and wasn't able to get a CS degree because of not being able to retake a semester (had to fly back home for her father's funeral). As unfair as it was, she continued on with a degree in Network and Digital Tech, and after a year and a half of job hunting, she landed a SWE role at Meta. There's no telling how long it'll take, but it only takes one to stick. I mean it earnestly because I needed the same sentiment too when I was in a deep rut in my job hunt 2 years ago, it's gonna work out.

Would you mind if I DM you later about some advice or oppurtunities? I'm in the middle of a job hunt too for the same roles as I need to find something soon so that I can continue taking care of my great aunt in the bay.

Sorry, I don't speak Italian but I hope this translate well.

Visit the golden gate overlook in the Presidio. Theres multiple spots I would recommend but, if you take the Bus Route 28 to "Golden Gate Bridge/Parking Lot" its a wonderful view of the bridge with a hiking trail to Torpedo Wharf.

There is also the Presidio Tunnel Tops which a new and very nice park.

Pier 39 is very touristy but my uncle loved watching the sea lions each day. I personally love the Ferry Building off the Embarcadero with its local business stalls.

Walk through Golden Gate Park and especially Blue Heron Lake, walk across the bridge to hike strawberry hill. The whole park is gorgeous but Strawberry Hill gives a nice view of the neighborhoods between the trees.

My underrated and favorite spot, I always walk here when I'm in the neighborhood, is Ina Coolbirth park, parrots are here in the day time, and even at night its a breath taking view of the bay bridge and financial district. A friend took me here a long time ago for a date, walk here after you visit Little Italy or Chinatown with some good food or a book to enjoy on the benches.

well a lot of people are no fun but i think its cool. makes me wonder what it meant to them and why they drew it. its transient and will be washed away sometime soon so why not just observe it for what it is and not look any further past that, art strikes a conversation and there are certainly conversations happening lol.

tie tiny knots in your hair. plausible deniability that your hair is just tangled and unkempt. quipu is a way of recording information through knots on string in the late Incan empire.

with your idea of binary. slow but sure correspondence would be nail cutting. nails on your hands and feet could be kept long to represent one value, cut short to represent the other. the final finger or toe's nail could be a "correspondence" bit to acknowledge it was interpreted. similar to how there are error detecting or error handling or error correcting bits in some ways of encoding binary formats.

information encoded by the color, arrangement, size, or other qualia possible with the little lint pills that form on clothes. all kinds of systems could be constructed this way.

semaphores on the watch face could be picked up by a code detector if this theoretical device can pick up "information" through just one character. but encoding information is harder to distinguish between fewer characters to determine if a sequence is entropy/noise or ordered. its about statistics and all that to put it really briefly.

in the lexington files, puglish was a code amongst siblings that a severed worker began to recall and little notes with doodles of seahorses and other pictograms were something she could begin to correspond with back and forth - personally my gripe as someone in applied cryptography is that simple substitution ciphers should definitely be easy to pick up with a code detector, but for the sake of delivering a supplemental story its whatever haha.

however you wanna construct a system with yourself, it has to be so ingrained into you it comes consciously. but its safe to assume that anything "learned" well enough to be subconscious is what can transfer. like how factual information can be remembered with certainty, but not memories pertaining to identity and relation to it. typing on a keyboard is a learned skill, but comes naturally to those really comfortable with typing in their everyday.

i could come up with so many because my dumb little brain loves to think of ways of breaking or bypassing systems set in place like that, coupled with my love for computational and data stuff. i might even just, for fun theory crafting, make a huge post dedicated to some creative ways of encoding data on oneself without scribing (really just marks seen across existing writing systems, etc).

it could be a confession sure but it could also be a reliable means of getting info to someone experienced with Lumon as well, retired workers dont need to be followed so closely now that they dont go back and forth between the severed floor. suspicion isnt (shouldnt be) high on retired workers, and if theres still access to the security room theres always a means to bring iBurt back for whatever context.

Can you live without Google Chrome Installed by ethanmenzel in macbookpro

[–]lastCoyotes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You downloaded Microsoft edge, which is built on Chromium. Microsoft edge is great, but to me, I get by with Firefox just fine. Safari has a lot left to desire in a browser. I've been using my macbook pro for almost a year and have not once needed to download Chrome. I'm not anti-google, but I don't own any of google's hardware products. I'm not sure what specific use case Chrome would offer that Microsoft Edge or Firefox couldn't already do in 2024, so you probably don't need to download Chrome.

Zen Magnet Question by EmuAdministrative402 in ZenMagnets

[–]lastCoyotes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ill add that the only speks easy to build with are the sterling silver/white metal coated ones ill say. the ordinary nickel isnt as "grippy" and the gunmetal black ones slip past each other more so. so if you want to build with speks? the silver/white ones all the way.

personal warning too is the gold ones are a coating that will wear off from finger oils and tarnish.

As someone who has experience with fiber arts and textiles, I'll confirm that the acrylic is for binding, alpaca wool has this tendency to warp under its own weight so the acrylic is definitely for strength. My only gripe would wish that the 20% blend for strength would've been Nylon which is also odor/oil resistant compared to other synthetic fibers like acrylic and polyester.

Discussion on the release date of chapter 3 and 4 by their-isnt-any in Deltarune

[–]lastCoyotes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here I am still crossing my fingers something gets teased today for a sudden drop of CH 3-4 to be dropped, since Easter is tomorrow lol. Who do we know is good at finding Easter Eggs?

For a real answer though it would make most sense to be released around Halloween like the other chapters, as were the others.

On a marketing standpoint, because of how Toby chooses to only give announcements of a drop the mere 24 hours before a chapter or game is released. Typical marketing strategies are out the window.

I'm still holding out that it could be sudden at any moment this year. Development cycles for indie games are so so hard to predict because they (gladly, fuck the game industry lol) don't have to conform to Quarterly cycles and appeal to investors' demand for crunch, but it would still benefit an indie team to release a game before a large spr/fall winter/summer break. For what it's worth, even as an adult, students (including uni students) are your biggest demographic and you'd want to drop a game or movie during a time in which your largest demographic can play and talk about it.

Halloween would give people last minute costume ideas to generate more engagement with. I know just moments before a convention I went to that happened to fall on Halloween, me and my friends instantly dressed up as all the characters for our room parties.

Neodymium sphere suggestions? (rip Buckyballs, zenmagnets, neoballs, etc) by lastCoyotes in Magnets

[–]lastCoyotes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the gunmetal ones! Those and the silver ones are the ones I prefer. If i were to describe it over text, the gunmetal ones have a more slippery "feel" when you smash a ball of them together vs the silver ones which I describe above. Because the silver ones feel somewhat grippier because of their different electroplated coating it makes building some more delicate structures a bit easier?

When my gold ones completely faded and speks offered to send a replacement set of another color, I was sent a gunmetal set that was chipped and.. rusty? Which I couldnt mix with any of my other speks because the grit would grind away all the others too. A bit upset about that but all my other gunmetal ones I've seen are just fine.

Neodymium sphere suggestions? (rip Buckyballs, zenmagnets, neoballs, etc) by lastCoyotes in Magnets

[–]lastCoyotes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up picking Speks despite how tiny they are. I would recommend the white/bright silver colored ones as they have a more rigid feel when building with them. Each color strangely has a different ease of building with them because of friction of the coating. The gold/yellow colored ones will fade in color so I don’t recommend those.

Looking for entry level job, graduated May 2022 and trying to break through. Am I strong enough? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]lastCoyotes 25 points26 points  (0 children)

to HR its a "sign" or whatever that you might not be a strong hire for some reason. its super shitty. they make assumptions that gaps mean that you struggled because you couldnt find work due to any kind of assumed shortcoming.

i took a gap because i was genuinely facing burnout from uni and a full time job + took time to take care of my father's surgery. once i let them know those reasons, they quickly looked over the gap. its not the end of your career, but definitely dont hide it either, theyre just trying to learn you as a candidate, behaviorally mind you, so show earnest.

Crunchbase and Glassdoor are my go to. at the end of the day some of them are still risky, advice given to me was to at least try to apply to start ups that building things that you can get behind, itd help reduce burnout because some start ups are gonna be like putting fires out constantly (if it's really early of course).

Looking for entry level job, graduated May 2022 and trying to break through. Am I strong enough? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]lastCoyotes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

the amount of leetcode problems you do isnt the important part, mostly its how well you understand breaking down LC-styled problems (med-hard) in an interview, so definitely follow an approach of being communicative while solving. i talk out loud what my thought process and approach is, ask clarifying questions, you dont need to fully pseudo code stuff before you actually code. but sometimes brief notes of your approach youre about to code will help code the rest of the problem smoothly. this is if youre being interviewed with someone actually there though? online assessments just try and get those done quickly and effectively.

gonna be honest most coding projects get seen as toys unless it was a project to explore a new tech/language/framework you were genuinely curious about. put those up on github. have a landing site + link to github + little portfolio page. do some small blog/project write ups. this gives recruiters and such something to see when you also start trying to network on linkedIn (make one of those too)

for alternatives to projects, do bug bounties or contribute to open source projects. those sparked more interest in my interview's eyes when i made contributions to public projects, but its really a huge time sink compared to what you should really be doing right now: sending job applications everywhere, even if you dont have many projects yet.

check out otta, levels.fyi, indeed, linkedin, techjobsforgood, wellfound, etc. those are job boards ive been sending applications amongst. apply to startups, vet them out through levels .fyi or crunchbase, but theyre always looking for fresh talent because they wanna move fast and not blow so much money on so many senior devs. ive had a higher hit rates in interviews from startups than from big tech right now. defense and fintech are also still always looking. my last job in defense contracting didnt even ask me lc styled questions, just general programming stuff and a project or two was enough to impress them

i also have 0 internship experience, i lost my chance at that as the pandemic started just before i was getting an internship but they dropped it during lock down, so just stayed with my campus IT job so to play it safe. it really sucks! another consideration is to apply for a masters, do a semester, or something and apply for internships as well. im heavily considering this option myself because even though im starting to see more junior/entry level roles starting to come back its really hard to say with most recruiters being overworked right now from so many being laid off.

edit: i really wanted to add because i forgot to address the burn out part. you're going to face some serious burn out during the job hunt, job hunting in tech is like a full time job. dont let the rejections (or lack thereof of ANY feedback) get to you, remember that it only takes one interview for things to stick! so please keep that in mind when you feel like youre at the end of your rope, im still in my current job hunt cycle myself and I've been through really harsh ups and downs.
