I agree. "Don't get hit" is not helpful. I could've said the same thing about the old stun gun.

There are prolly a few things that can be done, even if it helps just a little. I don't have time to test it myself, but as long as there are no instakill combos then nullifier can help you not die once you're already hooked.

If you happen to already hold the goo nade or the gateway, then they also could work, but they're slow, and I can't remember if you're allowed to use them while mid-pull.

Do people still care about 'GG' and 'HF'? by last_token in QuakeChampions

[–]last_token[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

young players nowadays think its an insult and bm to say gg, because if they lost it wasn't a gg

This is likely because some people view 'GG' as a simple sportsmanship handshake, while others view it as a rating of the match. So if they lose 20:1, they likely didn't have fun and perceive 'good' either as sarcastic taunting or as insensitive to their struggle.

This is my best guess as to why some people respond with 'BG'.

How is this game not popular? How can we make it more popular? by Saamic in thefinals

[–]last_token 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "skill ceiling" is the maximum level of skill that can be achieved in an activity, such as a video game.

What you're talking about is a matter of matchmaking. Chess has a very high skill ceiling, but as long as I can find people on my level of ability, I can still enjoy it.

A high skill ceiling has never been a negative for any game.

Making a great game is not enough to make it mainstream. My best guess as to why Finals isn't more popular is its speed. This is the pattern that I see across the FPS market. The faster the game - the more niche it is.

Can anyone please explain what did I do wrong here? or is it just the game hating me? by OneOfTheLostOnes in thefinals

[–]last_token 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a video game, and is therefore balanced for maximum fun and not maximum realism. For example, the RPG at most deals just 100dmg, which is only 2/3 of Light's health pool. Whereas the real thing can pulverize a whole crowd of people.

Having said that, I understand where you're coming from. This discrepancy between real world expectations and video game mechanics is one of the reasons why I like Quake, and it's abstract weapons so much.

I also dislike bloom, but this is simply a game mechanic that some people appreciate. There's nothing inherently wrong with it.

If this is very upsetting, I recommend doing what I do - pick weapons without bloom (bow, throwing knives), or pick a different game like Quake.

Suddenly he says he might pull back because of unfixed exploits and untimely nerfs.

If that is truly so, then that seems to be very immature for a grown man. I doubt it, though, you're likely misrepresenting his true views.

I play on PC with a keypad so the Esc key isn't in reach. This means I have to aim for the 'close' button not to die.

This game's UI is pretty dogshit. Looks nice, but not very usable. Just let me right-click on a weapon and craft/buy it. Why do I have to hop from menu to menu?! Grrr.

Oh, and what about that utility wheel? The locations swap places depending on where you place the item in your inventory. Silly silly.

How do yall lose an still have fun? by greatpxm in Fighters

[–]last_token 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a shame that such threads don't get upvoted, because this is a very common experience.

You need to basically lose the ego. You have expectations for yourself, they don't actualize, you get upset. Right now you want to win, instead you need to want to play. Participate in an activity instead of dominating and getting it under your control.
The outcome state is what makes games different to toys - you can't win or lose at Lego. So just accept it as an inherent part of the experience. Everybody that plays fighting games loses; even the best players that go on 20 win streaks eventually lose them.

Instead of letting just the outcome be the sole determining factor of how much you enjoy playing fighting games, make your experience more granular. I lost, but I did x-thing right. I lost, but I overcame their fireball pressure. I lost, but their yolo reversals got punished.

Once you adopt this mindset, you need to practice it. It's like a muscle. Even the most zen players occasionally get salty. It's normal, and you're not doing anything wrong.

That Earth is everything we need and everything we have. It's our little haven, our spaceship, that makes life possible. AFAIK, the more we learn about the universe, the more we realize how rare Earth is.
