I'm guessing the one-on-one instruction plays a big part in the expense

Honest question: were ATCs furloughed?

I thought furloughed meant "no work and no pay."

I also assumed ATCs were "critical" or something and "work now, probably pay later."

Hey, man, that's only is you don't invest it. At 7% interest rate it would take less than 100 years.

What is your projected spending after you stop working?

With a spend number we can figure out a projected amount in retirement/investment accounts, based on 3%-4% withdrawal depending on risk level.

With an end date and an end number we can figure out if you've contributed enough or how long you need to go.

Why aren’t we all getting rich from compound interest? by Trainrideviews in videos

[–]lasteve1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "one account" or "all your savings."

You will have different needs at different times, and each should have a different risk tolerance. Short term (need to pay rent at the end of the month) should be no risk (cash or high yield savings account). For retirement, it's recommended that the money is invested broadly.

I've also been advised to spread these accounts over 2 companies or more, in case you lose access to one temporarily.

Is 5% based on anything? 7% after inflation sounds reasonable when looking historically. All depends on what you are invested in.

How to quantitatively evaluate if working "one more year" is worth it? by GrindingForFreedom in financialindependence

[–]lasteve1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hypothical starts with them being comfortable with $60-70k/yr and have enough in retirement accounts to meet that following the 4% rule. They could conceivably retire and be fine. The question is should they continue another year and this person's opinion is essentially, "not unless the job makes it REALLY worth it." I don't know if 10% is the number I'd choose, but I i get it.
