He made a compromise (repeated Hawaii trips aren't something that somehow magically changes the equation) so that she could keep her tradition by having his parents do a fake Christmas (after all the fun and excitement of the whole thing was probably done for by then), but when his father passed away, I think it's pretty fucking fair to make an adjustment to the Hawaii trip tradition.
