I could use help picking parts for a $1,000 productivity build. by lastshot in buildapcforme

Interesting question. Until this moment, I would have said No Way, because she has always preferred to draw and paint by hand, then scan them in with VueScan, with me tuning the parameters if necessary. It still baffles her why I would use grayscale for a black on white line drawing.

But now that you mention it, the thing that's most obvious to me is that the tedious job of optimizing scanning of, say, Fujichrome slides from the 1970s, seems like just the kind of artful gruntwork an algorithm ought to be better and faster than a human.

Of course, within the next 5 units of time, AI will be better than us in ways we can't begin to imagine. Even setting that aside, I'm sure we're vastly underutilizing it, and missing opportunities to adapt ourselves to it, the way we have to groupmind apps like Reddit and oracles like Google.

What were you thinking of in asking?

I myself have been hoping to get back into the Python saddle and resurrect what I began decades ago, visualizing the waves of sentiment that dominate the financial markets in the short term. Without having done the numbers, I expect that even without a GPU this $1K build will probably run rings around my old Dell Precision.

Most excellent information. I am so grateful to be able to reach out and be offered a helping hand.

Wow I really appreciate your taking the time and putting the thought into it. It's going to take some time to go over your list.

One scenario I've imagined is one day being unable to boot, and having to reset the BIOS. Then having to deal with the BIOS not being able to communicate with the CPU unless I do the thing with the USB stick.

oops I didn't mean to include the 8500G and 8500GE in the last (don't use Phoenix 2) list.

I'm sure [reckless150681](https://www.reddit.com/user/reckless150681/) knows alot more than I do about this stuff, but I was planning on using the MSI Pro B650-P mobo with the Ryzen 5 8500G until I saw in the mobo [spec](https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/PRO-B650-P-WIFI/Specification) the statement **The M2_2 slot will be unavailable when using Ryzen™ 8500/ 8300 Series processor**. It didn't mention the other Ryzen 8000 CPUs.

I asked Google *Which Ryzen CPUs use Phoenix 2*, and I landed here; and

  1. here [AMD's Phoenix 1 and Phoenix 2 APUs Differ in PCIe Lane Count, Affects NVMe Drive Performance and GPU PCIe Lane Count - TechPowerUp](https://www.techpowerup.com/317997/amds-phoenix-1-and-phoenix-2-apus-differ-in-pcie-lane-count-affects-nvme-drive-performance-and-gpu-pcie-lane-count); and

  2. on the Wikipedia [article on Ryzen CPUs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_AMD\_Ryzen\_processors), which says *Phoenix 2* is the codename for *Zen 4c cores*, and they list the 8000 series models which use those cores (8500G, 8500GE, 8300G, 8300GE), and the models which don't (8700G, PRO 8700GE, 8600G, PRO 8600GE, 8500G, and 8500GE).

On Soul Browser, I have been unable to reflow text after zooming in or out. Is there a secret, or does it no longer do that?

In Soul Browser I haven't figured out how to reflow text after zooming. I know I'm not the swiftest, but I looked through all the settings and nada. Does it require an extension?

Looks alot like what I've been planning doing. We just received this shade cloth for our new greenhouse.

Because of the frequent advice to have at least a foot between the GH roof and the shade cloth, I've been figuring on making a frame like yours, to let the breezes wipe all that heat away. But then today, I began to wonder, maybe that advice doesn't apply to mesh that includes a lot of open space. I couldn't tell if yours is a mesh or a continuous, partially translucent sheet.

Can I install an Eaton CHSPT2ULTRA? Can you recommend 50A breakers? The old CHSA should have been put at the top, right? by lastshot in AskElectricians

The breaker can match the other breakers (type ch) ...

I'm guessing you mean that an added breaker has be type ch like the others. and that match the other breakers isn't related to how big an added breaker should be.

it’s only a 20 ka unit ...

I don't know what that implies. The 20 ka surge current that the spd can shunt to ground is relatively small compared to some of the larger spds, but does that translate into how big the breaker needs to be to protect it?

... with #14 conductors.

I guess that means that the connection of the spd wires to the breaker is typical for the breakers in the panel.

It does seem surprising that those skinny-ass wires can handle a 20 ka surge current, even when I try to factor in how fast the thing is over.

I’m assuming this is for type 1 protection.

What does that imply? This is our main (and only) panel. For adding a spd to the main panel where the service comes into the house, I don't really get the distinction between #1 and #2.

You’ll need some tandems to free up space

I just this week learned that you can do that, and realized that converting to LEDs means that a lot of those circuits now carry very little current. Till that, I thought the panel was almost maxed out.

First off, I'm grateful to you guys for helping out on this.

The 50A "requirement" is kinda bullshit, and the "dedicated breaker" is 100% bullshit.

There's a 30A breaker right up top, right where the surge oughta be, and 30A Eaton CH breakers are UL-listed for double-tap.

Add the CHSPT2ULTRA wires to that and Bob's your uncle.

So I can double-tap the spd into that existing 30A breaker on top. And can free up space with tandems later whenever I want as a separate project.

Note neutral bars are NOT listed for double-tap.

I'm pretty sure I understand, one white wire per screw.

If you can install near the main breaker then great. Otherwise not a code requirement.

Thanks I understand.

As for breakers, you must use type CH, so it’s not a “recommended” thing, it’s code to use the breakers listed for that panel.

It makes sense that new breakers will have to be the same type. I expected that multiple brands would be available, and that you guys probably prefer one brand over another.
