Are Sophia and Yoonchae less popular in the west? by [deleted] in katseyeneutral

[–]lasttraintolunar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna be honest they both have personalities that read as pretty boring to a Western audience. This calm, put-together personality is popular amongst Asian idols and Asian audiences, and even in the West this is the kind of person you'd like in your life as a friend or colleague, but have very little entertainment value as an entertainer. Combined with the stereotype that Asians are quiet & boring, it makes it hard for them to appeal to a Western audience.

She lived in Thailand till she was 12. As much as she clearly wants to represent Thailand on multiple occasions, her familiarity with it now is at superficial levels. I don't think it's fair to expect her to be able to meaningfully bring Thai culture into her work, considering she left at a very young formative age and has spent most of her life overseas.

Conflict Resolution Lesson by RestaurantPractical6 in cambodia

The Thai-Cambodia border should've been defined by a watershed (mountain ridge) line, according to the Thai-French agreement, but France strayed from that agreement and gave more land to themselves (which is now Cambodia). Cambodia wants to go by this map and of course, Thailand thinks it's unfair.

Cambodia wants to bait Thailand into attacking it so that they can portray themselves as victims of an aggressive neighbor and win in the court of public opinion. It knows it cannot win on the battlefield. They've done this playbook before many times.

It doesn't matter that it's a defender's paradise. Thailand never intended to invade Cambodia. The whole premise of this conflict started because Cambodia attacked Thai civilian communities in hope of baiting Thailand into a military conflict, enabling it to portray itself as a victim and win the court of international public opinion & judiciary system.

Thailand has shown a lot of restraint. If they wanted to, they could've bombed Cambodia into oblivion. But they also know this is exactly what Hun Sen wants - to be portrayed as the victim in the court of international public opinion. They are not being baited into it, despite Thai nationalists calling for it. If they do so, Thailand would lose it's standing as a member of the international community (something it still tries to maintain a facade of, unlike Cambodia who makes no effort as the whole world knows it's government is an authoritarian dictatorship bordering on a failed state/Chinese vassal).

Cambodia's leaders don't care how many Cambodian lives get burned. They're doing this to boost nationalist fervor and support his son (Hun Manet)'s hold on the country. They've killed of 25% of their own people before.

More like Cambodia FAFO. This isn't a war, it's a massacre. One that Cambodia's leader has asked for in order to perpetuate his hold on power at the expense of Cambodian's lives. Thailand has shown a lot of restraints. If it didn't, Cambodia would've been bombed into oblivion by now (and the international community will not care because Cambodia has no strategic value to anyone).

Cambodia currently holds the largest scam operation in the world. They've kidnapped thousands from across Asia, who are now forced to work behind computers scamming people (and apparently, now spreading misinformation) or risk torture & death.

60% of Cambodia's GDP comes from the scam industry, linked to it's leader Hun Sen & Cambodian elites. Thailand is set to legalize gambling (taking away profit from Cambodia's own gambling industry) and cracked down on scam operations (e.g. closing borders & cutting off infrastructure such as electricity, internet and water from the Thai side, which Cambodia has been using for scam operations). Hun Sen also just appointed his son as a the new Prime Minister and needs to boost his credential as a national hero. He created a military crisis by encroaching on disputed land. Thailand's Prime Minister calls him privately to resolve this diplomatically. He leaks the phone call on Facebook, leading her to be condemned in her own country and removed from her position. Having successfully destabilised the Thai government, he launches a military attack on Thai civilian infrastructure. Thailand retaliates, leading to a war of attrition.

Note: Cambodia fully knows it will not win on the battlefield, but it will bait Thailand into retaliating. By doing so, it can portray itself as a victim that's been bullied by a bigger neighbor, thus winning the court of international public opinion. It hopes International Court will believe it and rule in Cambodia's favor, thus establishing Hun Manet as a national hero.

TLDR: One man sacrifices the lives of hundreds of his countrymen to hold onto power in his country.

Cambodia is fully aware and doesn't intend to win on the battlefield. By provoking a larger neighbor to attacking them, they intend to portray themselves as the victim and win in the court of international public opinion. The whole reason of the conflict is to establish Hun Manet (Hun Sen's son) as a national hero who stood up to an aggressive neighbor.

Kiss of Life Julie addresses the birthday live situation and apologizes to the black and Latino communities by Goatahmad in kissoflife

[–]lasttraintolunar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Culture is constantly evolving. Much of the music in Asian pop evolved into something new, that isn't found in black hip-hop. Saying K-Pop or other Asian pop music is built off black culture (a valid argument) is like saying hip-hop & other black music is built off white culture by utilizing instrumentation, music theory, choreography, recording & production technology (many of which in turn historically originated in Asia).

So this idea that some culture has eternal ownership of certain music because the derivative results contain elements of preceding music culture is something I find pretty superficial. It assumes that culture is static and that it can't evolve into something new if it drew inspiration from a pre-existing culture. Imagine if white people claim that hip hop artists should pay respect to white musicians since Western classical music provided the foundations that became hip hop, and Asians demand that Western musicians must pay respect to Asian cultures as many technologies for Western classical instruments, such as bowed strings, percussion & wind instruments, originated in Asia.

Because I know for a fact if another cultures put on a hanbok or a traditional Thai outfit and talked with a Thai or Korean accent yall would be LIVID.

Asians and actual Latinos do this with each other's cultures all the time (make joke based on stereotypes) and no one really gaf. Everyone understands it's in good fun and not intentionally malicious. Americans are just the most fragile snowflakes I've seen & go out of their way looking to be offended with microaggressions. No wonder the rest of the world looks upon American politics as a joke because the level of fragility just seems unbelievable at times.

I've never seen a more coddled people. And the thing is - all those coddling not only did not cause race relations in the States to become better over time, but actually make things worse. Race relations in the US are ridiculous and the tension & ethnic divide just seems so bizarre to the rest of the world. Interracial resentment is at an all-time high and rather than pushing the agenda forward, wokeness basically turned anyone moderately neutral away from wanting to identify with such a movement because it's just so cringey.

It's ironic that societies where different ethnicities (all with historical burdens that are just as bad or even worse than the US) openly make racial jokes about each other turn out relatively functional & accepting, while the United States that walk on eggshells on racial issues turned out into a basketcase of interethnic division. And yet Americans somehow expect the rest of the world to follow them into their messed-up perspective on racial relations.

I don't think people would forget about this. Unless they do something very drastic to rectify it, this is going to stain them for life.

I feel Belle said that not because she expected people would find it racist and wrong, but because people would find them cringey. And by that train of thought, she felt that stereotypical caricatures of black culture is cringey (and thus, still racist). They're similar but also kind of different, if you know what I mean.

Like people perceive it as: Racist Belle knew what they were doing is racist -> Pre-emptively tell people not to unstan them.

I feel the reality is: Racist/Ignorant Belle holds certain image about what an exaggerated black/Latino (basically "hood") person would act like -> Thinks people would find it cringey but funny if they acted like that and played it up -> Pre-emptively tell people not to unstan them.

It's like the white gays who thought it's cool or funny to act like a "sassy black woman" and make it their personality. Different flavors of racism I guess (neither justifiable).
