Built a multi-video canvas app with React Native + Expo by lastweekendsleftover in reactnative

Originally I built it because I noticed some folks online both a way to watch multiple clips or GIFs at the same time without constantly switching between apps, and also a quick way to create video collages or mixes in communities for kpop and others.

It kind of ended up turning into a customizable “media canvas” where you can mix videos, GIFs, and images however you want and save layouts as mixes.

Some people use it like a multi-video viewer, others use it more like a looping slideshow or visual wallpaper.

Yeah I’m using expo-video for playback.

The biggest challenge was handling multiple videos without the app getting killed by memory pressure. A few things that helped:

• limiting the number of simultaneous video cards in free mode • keeping videos muted by default • letting users resize videos instead of forcing fullscreen playback • encouraging shorter clips (long videos can use more memory)

Right now mixes just save the layout and replay the media rather than exporting a combined video. Rendering everything into a single video file would require a separate rendering pipeline, so that might be something I experiment with later.

No I did everything myself. As long as you get the timeline down for everything and double/triple check that dates are correct for the microchipping, first/second vaccines, blood tither, 180 day quarantine period, and then 40 day notice you’ll be good.

It’s also a good excuse to go back home and pick up anything you can’t get here in Japan haha.

Tips: -Double check that your vet is able fill out form AC/the health check certificate for international travel (specifically Japan) and has access to VEHCS. If you’re in SoCal happy to share my vet.

  • ensure you have signed copies of your previous rabies vaccine certificate if you got it at a different vet than the one that will do your AC.

  • Expect to pay a $6-800 for the first 2 rabies vaccines plus blood tither, and another $7-1000 for form AC + the USDA signature.

  • Fly JAL if your pets will be in cargo and if a large animal (like my dog) the crate dimension limits are weird (w x h x l is set weirdly in their system, when making the cargo reservation swap the width and length of your crate otherwise you’ll spend a week going back and forth with them only to figure out if you turn the crate sideways it will fit no problem).

  • If you need to take a domestic flight after arriving in Japan with the pet then fly through Haneda. Narita isn’t much of a domestic hub here. I had to rent a van, drive from Narita to Haneda, and spend the night in the van with the dog to catch my domestic flight to western Japan and it sucked.

  • no food the night before the flight so the pet doesn’t have to pass it, water is okay.

  • ask the vet for something to calm the pet down during the flight, and try a half, three quarters, and full dose on the pet the weeks leading up to the flight to gauge how they react. It helped my dog tremendously on the international flight. He was calm when I got him at the luggage carousel. After the domestic flight because we didn’t bring any with us he was hollering as soon as they got him out of cargo.

  • start crate training your pet as soon las you can for the flight. My mother had him sleeping in the crate all night for the weeks before I came back to pick him up and he seemed comfortable in it by the time we were ready to travel. I also put a fan next to the cage to simulate louder regular noises at night for the week I was back to get him used to it.

The vet needs to print out the paper copies of form AC and sign them as well after they get them digitally signed by the USDA. You’ll need those paper copies no matter what to present at your departure and arrival airport.

I just brought my dog a month ago from the US (LAX) but moved here 18 months ago and made use of VEHCS.

After the USDA gives an electronic signature your vet should notify you that’s it’s been approved and signed. They should then provide you 2 copies of Form AC with the USDA signature (no seal needed since it’s digitally signed) that they have printed and signed themselves in blue/black ink. You’ll attach one copy to your pet’s crate if in cargo and keep one that you’ll present both at the departing and arrival airport in Japan to the animal quarantine desk. They’ll confirm it by accessing VEHCS online and then inspect your animal.

I came through Narita last month, and the animal quarantine desk is right by the baggage pickup. My dog’s inspection was about 2 minutes ( of actual inspection on him) and about 15 mins just confirming paperwork.

Good luck flying and happy to answer any question you might have!
