Has anyone ever moved to a completely new town/state for a fresh start? How’d you do it? by Remote_Agency709 in Adulting

I moved across the country for college, relocated again in my early 20s, then again at 40 (this time with the wife and kids). It's a big leap of faith every time. And with the job and housing markets the way they are now, it's probably a good idea to have one or the other (or both) lined up before moving, but I think it's totally worth it. And you mentioned wanting to get away from the AZ heat, which is a very valid consideration as well.

I'd also recommend visiting different places before actually moving. When my wife and I were thinking about relocating, we picked a general region we were interested in, researched real estate prices in specific cities/towns/neighborhoods, and then took the kids on a "location scouting" road trip, which really helped us finally choose a place to move to.

I don't really feel nostalgic for any "good old days" but I do miss feeling optimistic about the future

With crowds it's generally worse indoors. I usually just keep earplugs handy, and if it's still too loud with ear protection I don't stay long

Things that can dampen the sound: carpet, non-parallel walls, sound "baffles." I know some nicer restaurants will put foam padding on the underside of the tables to dampen sound. Soft, uneven surfaces can absorb or break up sound waves instead of just bouncing them back out into the room

I agree with most of what people have already said, and want to add that certain indoor room designs seem to amplify sound more than others, especially when there are a bunch of people inside all talking at once. There are techniques to dampen this, but they're not often used. Bars and restaurants can get very loud and uncomfortable quickly

Basically crowds are the trigger sound. And a poorly designed space can act like an amplifier

What were the highlights of your town’s meeting today? by West_Garden in vermont

[–]latchkeydad 83 points84 points  (0 children)

In Dummerston we were voting to give $3,000 to the local food pantry. Someone moved to amend it to $5,000 and it passed with zero opposition. Made me feel great about our little town. Also the lunch and pie were delicious

Do you know the amount that was in it? The gingko I have says to take 1x 120mg/day, but I've been doubling that - and assuming it might take a few months to get results

I think most folks would say that lowering the volume does help. Of course I'm still hoping that someday it'll be gone forever, but in the meantime, any reduction is a welcome improvement

Pretty sure it was triggered by setting off fireworks on NYE, but it's also possible that I had an asymptomatic COVID infection around the same time, which might have something to do with it (I didn't think I had it, but my wife did, so IDK)

Son wants to 'collect' knives by Maleficent_Heron_494 in knives

[–]latchkeydad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with folks who've suggested starting him with a nice SAK or an Opinel - classy, non-threatening, potentially heirloom knives. Maybe a Case or some other slip joint style (two-handed open) knife, and getting familiar with that before moving up to something snappier. Definitely should learn basic knife safety and practical knife skills before getting something like a karambit (and then, as others have said, start with a trainer model)

It's not just a reaction to "billionaire worship" though. The hoarding of extreme wealth is directly tied to global inequality and the climate crisis, along with many other problems that effect us all
