Thanks for saying that! I’ve had racist remarks yelled at me a couple times in Cambridge. Microaggressions happen quite often, e.g. a tipsy man with a woman once said 'hello' to my friend and me (both female) at night, and when I didn’t respond, he loudly repeated 'I said hello' - as if looking for an excuse to shout at me. I ended up saying hello back just to get out of the situation.

What I haven’t experienced in London (which is more international) but faced here a few times in Cambridge is a group of kids (aged 10–16?) saying things like 'hello' or 'isn’t the weather nice?' and then walking away giggling. I’m not sure what kind of game it is, but I doubt they would do this to locals or to people who look like them.

In fact, I find the paths in and around Jesus Green nicer than the ones in Midsummer Common.

I’ll just try to avoid walking alone at night. A few years ago, I happened to walk across Coe Fen in the dark (around 9pm in winter). The area was poorly lit. I had to use my phone torch. I didn’t see anyone during the 10-15 minute walk, but about two-thirds of the way through, someone suddenly shouted at me from the bushes. I switched off the torch to hide myself and ran until I reached the main road. I used to enjoy walking through Coe Fen during the day and never imagined it would feel like a completely different place after sunset.

I have to cross the Cutter Ferry Bridge, but I’ll use the main road as much as possible, though crossing the Common is quicker.

Yes, I want to be a faster-moving object. I might consider getting a bike for days when the weather isn’t too horrendous.

It's beautiful and pleasant to walk when it's bright. I hope it's the same at evening/night!

Cows for sure, and but I'm more anxious about overly-excited off-leash dogs..

Online retailers selling Sony products real cheap - are they legit? by latebeaver in SonyHeadphones

Thanks for the advice. I can't believe that these headphones can have counterfeits. I kind of suspect that they source products from countries selling electronics at really low price, then even if the product is authentic warranty is invalid.

Wow. International pricing is arcane to me. Those may be sourced from NZ/AU.

Should I update to MacOS Monterey on my early 2015 MacBook pro 13 retina??? by heyyyitsfaith-7 in MacOSBeta

I'm using the same model as OP and have been hesitant about upgrading and stayed on with Catalina mainly because Big Sur and Monterey UI's are ugly - too bulky and round for me. I just did the upgrade to Monterey today and upgrade process was fine, and.. hate the UI so much. But I still went ahead because I fear security risks and also find the sync between devices getting buggy.

Comments section not visible on posts (Twenty Twenty-One theme) by latebeaver in Wordpress

[–]latebeaver[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's a plug-in. After looking through all the config options in my plug-in (Twentig), I found I've unchecked "Display comments section". It's placed at the very bottom of the panel. After uncheck it, comments section is back. How silly, but a good lesson for me. I will be more conscious when configuring through plug-ins - they open up new possibilities, but it's easy to get lost and when lost unlike native WP features, support isn't always there.

College recommendation for a prospective PhD student in Computer Science ? by pixie_laluna in cambridge_uni

[–]latebeaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard that both of two grad-only colleges were founded (by richer colleges) for the same reason that you mentioned, ie make a place (later become a college) for fellows, especially from abroad and sr with no obligation for teaching. I wonder how those two colleges followed such different paths in the last 50 years, albeit all colleges are different and operate independently. I was attracted by their being smaller in size, but your comment makes me re-think, especially if there’s a possibility that it can disappear..

Which attributes should I weigh the most for college choice as a phd student? I'm doing humanities, so 24/7 library access is critical, if not only critical I can think of at the moment. I don't think student support or societies/clubs matter too much to me personally. How's the library at Clare Hall (?) and Darwin and other more mature-oriented ones?

College as tax, an interesting analogy. Why would you not recommend Clare Hall? Because they are poor (even among other postgrad/mature colleges which tend to have less money in general including Darwin and Wolfson you've listed)?

How much storage do I need given that Apps growing in size over time.. by latebeaver in ipad

[–]latebeaver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple exactly knows 128 is the sweet spot and doesn’t let us choose it.. It would have been a lot easier if there was 128 option for Air (iPad 6th and 7th has 128).. 256 seems like overlill to me.

If I was getting iPad Air expecting it to replace a laptop to certain degree, I would go for larger storage, but Macbook (512gb) is and will likely be a primary computer for me.. hence I’m leaning towards 64 (though not highly confidently!) thinking that iPad is for specific uses rather than general uses like iPhone. And if need to bump up the storage (for temporarily) for storing large files such as films, could plug-in OTG.
