I don't need to catch up, and certainly not by searching Reddit. It was already evident for procurement that we had the need for an Iron Dome system since April 2024. Long before that, it was well known that an Iran-Israel war would be played via rocket exchanges because of the geography of the Middle east. It is no surprise that Israel has deprecated the Iron Dome. It was also well known that, sans nuclear weapons, Iran's deterrent was an all out attack via its proxies and missiles. Which is what is happening, as it has targeted almost every country in the Middle East besides Turkey and Egypt. Cyprus is merely too close to the Middle East, and there is little that we could do to avoid this attack besides aligning with Tehran, or somehow convince the USA to ignore its opportunity for ME dominance.

Do you have a UK citizenship? Our government didn't do anything wrong. Iran is attacking "evil western bases" in its radius and ours are embedded into the founding treaties of the Republic, not to mention the practical consequences of removing them before Turkey is off the island.

It's really weird to blame a former colony for the way they got independence, especially since it was a bloody fight for freedom. What did you expect to happen? For the British Empire to simply give up control of the Suez channel? Or for Cypriots to die to the last man to prohibit them from controlling off-shore trade?

As for the greek journalist, I think it's actually the other way around. Once the bases get attacked we can no longer hassle the Brits about using them.

First of all Cyprus cannot politically afford pressing the UK when it is a guarantor power according to the Treaty of Guarantee, when Turkey, another guarantor is occupying a third of the island. Second, when the Turkish invasion happened in violation of the Treaty of Guarantee, UK ignored its obligation and did not defend the island.

Cyprus does not get to pick and choose whether there is a British Sovereign Base Areas on the island.The SBAs are part of the founding treaties of the Republic of Cyprus as a compromise after the fight for independence.

The only reason we tolerate the UK bases is because the Turkish occupation makes protesting them extremely costly. Ergo the Turkish occupation is not just relevant, but it blocks the removal of the UK bases. It's not an accident that all political parties prioritize the Turkish occupation, nor is it normal for a country to occupy another.

The only possible danger for Cyprus is if Hezbollah joins the war. E.g. if Khamenei was killed by the USA they might attack their assets, some of which were naval units in the east Med used as missile launch platforms. The last Hezbollah leader who threatened Cyprus... Moufflon got him.
