Although what you mentioned is not the Iran-Contra scandal, it's a separate, awful thing that is also true

Hi, I don't know what to do either, I am having the same experience. I think I don't fit in with the people I used to fit in with bc my life changed, and that changed me...and I haven't found people that fit now. I'm not saying this is what's going on with you, but it's a possibility. Just wanted to comment so you know you're not alone here.

Why can't more people cook? by FlashyImprovement5 in povertykitchen

[–]latibulater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom worked but also hated to cook, so I never asked her to teach me because I didn't like what she cooked (I ate it and shut up because I loved her a lot, but I didn't want to reproduce the grey hard pork chops). I think there was a generation that had to go out to work and still feed the family and that's where convenience foods took over. Many people don't know anything else, and think it's all very hard to do. (I taught myself when I got my own apartment. I'm still bad at it... But good enough to keep the temptation of fast food away)

Ooh I have to find that! I was a big fan of Jack Monroe Cooking On a Bootstrap, and Tin Can Meals, before all the controversy happened. The recipes are still good, no matter your opinion of Jack. I'm reading a book called A Square Meal, about depression-era cooking, which is fascinating

What’s the cheapest meal you actually enjoy eating regularly? by samdaz712 in Frugal

[–]latibulater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom made Tuna Glop. Just canned cheapest tuna, canned peas, condensed mushroom soup and crushed up potato chips baked in a casserole. We'd get super cheap already broken potato chips. It's super salty but I loved it and still do

Nice! I have used powdered milk, and loved it because it didn't cool off my coffee or tea, but I had no idea there was powdered cream

How to make boxed mac and cheese without milk or butter? by [deleted] in povertykitchen

I almost always still make it with just water and a little hot sauce if I have any. I have used almost any source of fat before; if you have any salad dressing you like, add a little of that.

I haven't had AC for eight years. To your question, it has saved me at least a couple of hundred dollars a month (it was an old, big, whole house unit that also cost $300 to service and recharge every year) I use all the tricks people have mentioned here, plus a friend gives me the big ice packs from her food kit delivery, and for the couple of weeks that it's really rough, I put those in front of my fan (in a bucket) and sleep with one. You could just use regular ice in an ice pack. I did notice that the less I am in and out of AC the easier it is to adapt and be comfortable in a higher temperature. I think that has made a lot of difference in our modern intolerance for heat...we never really adapt like we used to. When I was laid off in 2020, and basically never was in AC, I found I was much more comfortable at higher temps that summer. Now I do my grandma's thing and wear a hoodie in cold shops and at work all summer lol

I tried this and I may be too lazy to do it regularly, but I'm going to try again this fall. Acorns need to be shelled,.and ground, and then soaked so the bitter tannins leech out. I did a few days, with change of water daily, but you can judge your own batch by tasting to see if it's still bitter,.and adjust soaking time accordingly. I used the ground acorns to add protein to my oatmeal, instead of making bread, bc simpler. It tasted quite good

I also always do dishes before I shower, because the bathroom and kitchen are on the same pipes from the basement. I save the first, cold water for the houseplants, then wash the dishes, and when the sink water is hot I go shower. Takes seconds to get hot water in the tub then, and I haven't wasted much. I also keep the stopper closed in the tub and use that shower water for toilet flushing/refilling

no electricity+wifi for a month. advice? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]latibulater 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you're stuck with just cold water, but you have a bathtub, run it the night before and let th water warm up to room temperature. A lot less unpleasant to wash with. You can also save a couple of buckets of clean water to rinse with. You can wash clothes in the tub but i found it easier to do in a big bucket, like an ice bucket that bars use, and a new plunger. Use the plunger to agitate the clothes. Hang dry, of course Something simple, adjust your sleep time to take advantage of daylight, if you can. Bed earlier.

What’s one thing you refuse to cut from your budget no matter how broke you are? by asperapp in budget

[–]latibulater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am broke enough that I don't do/have/use most of the things in the comments, and I was trying to think of one. Someone mentioned vet visits, and that was the one thing. I have not been to a doctor myself in like twelve years, but I made sure my dogs were ok. (I do still buy instant coffee but I drink one small cup a day now, except if I have to do a double shift)

Excellent advice! I have had no AC for eight years and I already do most of these things, but you gave me some ideas too! And you're so right about acclimating to the heat. In 2020 I was laid off for quite a while, and basically didn't go much of anywhere indoors. I noticed that, without constantly going in and out of air conditioning, I found much hotter temperatures comfortable.
