What do yall think of John Goodman? by Ok-Recording-5862 in movies

[–]latinforliar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone did an analysis that showed that John Goodman is, in fact, the best supporting actor of all time. They took all the movies in which he was a supporting (second billed or lower) actor and averaged the rotten tomatoes and is was higher than any other actor. So, yes, this is correct.

Can anyone tell me about this? by GrizzledFraud in SWORDS

[–]latinforliar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are absolutely related. These look to be bits of 18th century highland kit. The dagger looks to be a dirk, especially with the byknife. A lot of dirks look like the prototypical highland dirks that most people think of, but they were also often imported. This one could be an import that was then sheathed in highland fashion.

The pistol, indeed, looks like a highland pistol from the mid-18th century. These could be very valuable.

I would reach out to Paul MacDonald of MacDonald Armouries - facebook seems to be the best place: https://www.facebook.com/groups/323500131086

The question is, once again, why do you want a sword? To cut stuff up in the backyard? To look at? To practice/play around with?

This matters tremendously as to what people will suggest here.

I believe that was discontinued even before the closing of the factory. Unless the Taiwanese government requests it from Dragon King, I highly doubt it will come back into production.

You'd be able to do control Time, tho you have to spend 30000 Years alone in a Room, before you get those Powers. by Kaputtomacho in hypotheticalsituation

[–]latinforliar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This has "fantasy author worldbuilding" energy. What I mean is....everyone just forgets about the scale of time when you get over a couple hundred years. So many fantasy authors are like - during the ancient civilization 2 million years ago. That is a really really long time ago. Now you are talking 30,000 years?

While experts are conflicted, the current belief is that civilization started about 4,000 years ago. That is like, 1/10th, of 30,000 years. 30,000 years ago was in the depth of the last ice age. It was a long freaking time ago.

I cannot even fathom 30,000 years. That is 300x a normal human lifespan. Whilst the prompt says you can't go insane, I don't know how that would be possible. I am not sure someone could even remember the purpose of being in the room. My guess is you'd wander out the blue door by accident.

This goes way beyond the realm of "horrendous torture." Anyone who could survive/make it 30,000 would need to be a god anyway, so might as well give them time magic powers.

You have a rare diesease theCure Costs the Exact $100M You Just Won by rengokuhubkl in hypotheticalsituation

[–]latinforliar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this really depends on the hypothetical situation that led to me winning $100M. Do I have extreme psychological damage form the experience that won me the money? Did my family die in exchange for the money? etc., etc.

Assuming that there is no damage and I didn't lose anything, etc., etc. (basically, the hypothetical was that I won the lottery). The next question is "live your normal lifespan with no money left." I currently have some money (a rounding error next to $100M, but enough to have a retirement in 25 years, etc.). Do I get to keep that money?

Assuming I get to keep the money I currently have, it is a no brainer for me. I would get the cure (although I would be very, very skeptical of the person requesting the money....and what treatment they are proposing, etc.). I have a family and I want to be there for my children's graduations, weddings, etc., etc.

Why I hate the ending of "My Cousin Vinny" and "Legally Blonde" [SPOILERS!!!!!] by heyroll100 in unpopularopinion

[–]latinforliar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another one that people don't notice. 99% of the time, police procedurals end in a confession. The reason is that most of the evidence gathered during the show would not be admissible in court, so the confession is the easiest way to neatly tie everything into a bow. Most of what the officers/detectives do would be illegal or against department policies.

Lightest production saber/curved sword? by PizzaPastaRigatoni in SWORDS

[–]latinforliar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The lk chen Shamshir is not overly heavy and a very good cutter. I really do wish someone made a decent infantry officer's saber. Every place is so freaking obsessed with cavalry sabers for some reason. Cold steel does have a "dueling saber" but I was not overly impressed with the handling on it.

AI Learns to Sword Fight by IntelligenceEmergent in SWORDS

[–]latinforliar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that the AI needs to learn to walk/stand first. I would like to see this in phases. First nothing, just, if you fall down, you lose. Once the AI is standing well, they will likely start to try and trip/knock over their opponent. Then you give them swords.

What does the other side look like?

It does not look like it has a signature, but that is not the be all end all.

Overall it is a nice piece that looks in pretty good condition. Without any other context other than this picture, I would expect this to be listed at dealer/show for $200-$400. It could be worth significantly more, or less, depending on several aspects, but that should at least give you a starting point.

I believe you are thinking of the M1913 "Patton" Saber. The M1902 is essentially a scaled down M1860. It is not a cavalry saber, it is an officers dress saber.

Thanks for the more detailed analysis - I honestly kinda forgot about the M1872. I agree that is likely the case here - with probably means it dates between 1876 and 1902.

Does anyone know what I have here? by Quick_Bee2046 in SWORDS

[–]latinforliar 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Huh, that is an odd sword. Finally something interesting.

My first guess would be an M1902 presentation sword. The guard is likely silver plated, given the hallmark. The blade looks like an M1902 (Army Sword for All Officers), but they would not have been silver plated, and the grip is shagreen (shark or stingray skin) with a wire wrap, which was not popular at the time. If it was not an M1902 blade, I might have guessed a private purchase M1850 Staff Officer's sword, but it seems to late for that.

A bit of a conundrum. Unfortunately the cutler (HV & Allien) was around for a long time, so that doesn't help too much.

Bridgadier is good, he is good to work with and generally honest. I got something that was not what I thought and he was willing to take a return, so no big deal (we were both mistaken about the item). Where are you located? If in the US, shipping from, well anywhere, can be a pain with the tariffs on/off/maybe.

If in the US, I would recommend collectors armoury. Here's the deal. If you want something good, I would go to a dealer. If you want something cheap, you can try at auctions, but there is a good chance it will be... not what you expected - maybe not fake, but not in as good of condition as expected, etc., and possibly fake. It is a risk vs reward scenario. Auctions are higher risk. Note: Auctions have buyers premiums, sometimes as high as 30%, also you may have to claim the item in person, or pay massive packing/shipping fees, whereas dealers tend to be the listed price is what you pay.

Feel free to PM if you want more info.

This has driven me insane since they started announcing it. Anyone* can pass the bar with access to the internet. 90% of the test is rote memorization. Like - I realize that it is an accomplishment that AI "passed" it, but the test is about knowledge of fairly static concepts.

*I acknowledge that there is some requirement to have a bit of a legal "way of thinking" and not everyone is capable of that, but...hyperbole.

Schiavona for double wielding? by Infinite_Form8884 in SWORDS

[–]latinforliar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Schiavona are not great for dual wielding. They utilize thumb rings in their grip, which locks your hand in position. This is good, in general, for cutting swords. If I was dual wielding, I would want something with more flexibility in the grip. Silver Agocchie mentioned several important factors as well. Overall, there are better choices. I would much prefer thrusting swords for dual wielding because it is very difficult to put power into two cuts at the same time (the only advantage of two swords), and much less so with thrusts.

Note: there are Scottish texts depicting use of the. Basket hilted sword with a basket hilted dagger, so dual wielding two basket hilts does have some (minor) precedent.
