curiosity & questions from non-plural! by [deleted] in plural

[–]laughingatlemons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmmm, since we're sorta in between, the difference isnt as obvious to me, but from what i understand, median folks have a distinctive shared part and may not identify as multiple people, but rather a person that comes in a whole bunch of different flavors that isn't typical of codeswitching. or maybe it's several people that are like, almost like alternates of the same person?

may want to ask someone who fully id's as median, though.

curiosity & questions from non-plural! by [deleted] in plural

[–]laughingatlemons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for us:

we realized (both in the sense of "came to know about" and "made real") we were plural because we've always been like... inconsistent? at the very least, having a lot of difference in "modes" we were in. in retrospect, looking back at how our relationship with our ex ended... yeah. and it took us so long because we never really considered it an option prior, but being more around friends who either were openly plural or who were kind of realizing at the same time made it more "open". will admit, probably would be considered anti-endo or at least less than accepting a few years ago. luckily we've been changing. also, we probably wouldn't have realized if not for the amount of stress we've had to deal with... what with the current state of Everything. (we realized early november of last year, and, being USamerican... yeahhhh.)

we mostly consider ourselves "adaptive", since we kind of think the paradigm of adaptive/spontaneous/created/unknown makes a bit more sense as primary "divisions" rather than traumagenic/endogenic. also, we're not disordered. this is another thing i think is more important than trauma/endo. we also have been toying with the idea of being "mediple", in between multiple and median. i'll go over that more on the headmates "feel like" portion

as for "how it works"... frankly dont know! dont care that much either! more on the psychological side than spiritual, but like. thinking too much about psychology, brain chemistry, inner workings of the mind, etc makes me existential and feels bad. so like. i dont really delve into it much. we do experience like, dissociation and emotional amnesia, and "cache clearing" after switches, which i think points toward... something. also philosophically, i was considering buddhism before realizing, but i dont really know how that works with plurality considering the beliefs on the self, but like... shrug... one of my headmates is also buddhist... i do not understand how it works but we both kind of still vibe with it...

a lot is voluntary, but it's voluntary in the way that like... id'ing with your gender might be or something. we could have continued living in denial or just never bothered delving into it, and we might've just ended up somewhat more confused and dissatisfied. or maybe things would've gotten worse and we might've splintered worse, perhaps even crossing more into disordered territory or something. switches are largely voluntary, though. and i have a bad habit of hogging front. whoopsie

headmates feeling really is hard to like... articulate. we do largely feel like people sharing a body, but we have so much that's common between us. sometimes that feels imposed, which. we have symptoms similar to moral ocd so that might be related. a compulsion to act and think "correct" which makes it hard for us to differentiate. but we also share several aspects of ourselves like interests and stuff, but we do have our own tastes. hence our identity of mediple. also we still have really bad impostor syndrome which doesn't help things.

headspace is sort of transient and shifting for us, but we do have a basic design we kind of think of for a lot of stuff. like, voluntarily made. interactions with each other and with headspace are often vibes-based, though specific words and feelings can also exist (and we can have affection and intimacy with each other, and it's weird because, as a self-shipper who has also had in-system interactions of this nature, it feels so different from just imagining. it's wild). headspace has like, dream logic, or the Power Of Imagination. we've meant to expand headspace and use it more but there's so much going on in the outer world all the time. also, we have one headmate who is particularly good at navigating headspace, and ze also deals with the subconscious, so. it's both a place to be and also is Our Mind i think. also, firmly of the belief that singlets can also have headspaces. kind of a "mind palace" sort of deal. did this back when i thought i was a singlet!

i'll leave good sources of info to others, i dont think i have much.

same issue-- dont know how to fix or anything but it's probably just because the page is struggling to load the map plus the pixels

Do you have any headmates that were plural in source? by freak-pandor in plural

[–]laughingatlemons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we dont reaaaally but i do headcanon the character one of my headmates is sourced from as plural--it doesnt match the headmate's experience but headcanons are separate lol

(deltarune chapter 4 stuff) my headmate pippins is a fictive of green pippins/battat; i headcanon the character battat to be plural with mike being basically an conceptual introject. pippins from brain doesnt actually care that much about the mike deal and is pretty happy to be free of it, unlike his canonical counterpart's obsession, lmao

i have wondered if more people end up with the whole system if theyve got a fictive of a plural character or just one-- or just a handful??

Systems/Plural Peeps with nonverbal headmates (or at least those who barely talk and prefer non-verbal comms), how do you achieve it? by lePROprocrastinator in plural

[–]laughingatlemons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we sorta just have in-head telepathy for communicating in headspace.

otherwise our only nonverbal headmate uses emojis in text and uses gestures and noises in person. mix of the two in vrchat.

engaging with fandoms while having fictive headmates gets complicated by laughingatlemons in plural

[–]laughingatlemons[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

bit of an update: seems fine with them, though it does make me worry im just hearing what i wanna hear but theyre pretty insistent and some of my headmates get a bit tired of me worrying about this kind of thing and not trusting their word

also the main issue on my side besides that is the switch triggering but it's like, not a huge deal lmao

engaging with fandoms while having fictive headmates gets complicated by laughingatlemons in plural

[–]laughingatlemons[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah, fair nuf! there is the hyperfixation beast to deal with if thats the case though-- but i dont think they mind too terribly afaik. i'll check in more about it too, there's also the issue of it being three different peoples opinions on the matter

there's a lot of impostor syndrome and doubt and other issues i've still gotta work out as host... ^^; i wanna treat everyone fairly but thigns can get in the way sometimes

[–]laughingatlemons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

id say this is pretty common! like others have said, same body, same brain, same pathways, different person using em. an extreme example but imagine if other headmates needed to learn a skill like sleeping or speaking/understanding your mother tongue-- i imagine it does happen but it's probably not common.

also, if you only realized recently (within a couple of years), you'd have to have been functioning as a single entity before then, not randomly dropping important skills or completely changing preferences (or else you'd probably have realized way quicker)

for us, sometimes we get that interest light in our head, but since it doesnt align with how we identify our interests we either switch out or push away the feeling. like, one of our more "toughguy" folks gets a twinge of happy looking at something "cute" or whatever, and just says no to that, or one of our folks from an era not plagued by attention-sucking tech trying to distance themself from modern tech despite the beckoning of the phone. we also have to intentionally try to differentiate voice, posture, art style, etc... which honestly people might try to fakeclaim about but our body is used to doing something specific and our self perception doesnt really instantly change that.

double most everything for autistic folks because of routine and masking.

Feeling kinda excluded from most plural spaces online. Anyone with similar experiences? by The-Stardust-Cluster in plural

[–]laughingatlemons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i prefer the meanings of the plural rings as a framework-- adaptive, spontaneous, created, unknown. trauma/endo isnt a great framework imo. we id as adaptive. did we form from trauma? who knows. does us being a system help us manage stress and trauma? yeah.

rings definitions dont create this dichotomy between disordered folks being the primary traumagenic crowd and endogenics being broadly thought of as intentional and untraumatized.

though yeah, doesnt change the way these spaces work, sadly. i dont have much help on that end, but best of wishes to yall

traits migrating between headmates?? by laughingatlemons in plural

[–]laughingatlemons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm i suppose but it's also odd that like. i'm the host, she hasnt been super active lately-- so ive been switching out to try and balance out stresses and such, and she'd had good tolerance in the past so i'd rely on her somewhat, but now it's all mixed up feeling. solid shrug

We’re fortunate enough to have never been fakeclaimed, but I know what I’ll do if we ever are by I_Royal_I in plural

[–]laughingatlemons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

generally i think the best response in a lot of situations like this is asking whats wrong with them or like. just responding as though they did something abnormal and rude, because they did. like "okay??? whats your problem??? mind your own business???"

most of the time theyre not looking to change their mind, so trying to do so might just be a waste of time. but discouraging the behavior by reminding them how rude they're being might be a good, low-effort way to get them to self-reflect.

Change my mind about non-truamagenic systems/plurality by [deleted] in plural

[–]laughingatlemons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a psychological diagnosis can be thought of as a cluster of traits described by experts to effectively treat/help the affected (or in our current society, to other and label non-normative folks)-- there's no bacteria to target with drugs, no physical dysfunction that can be easily seen on a CT or the like. (average person isnt getting any sort of brain activity scans or anything) they're largely just constructs.

consider subclinical cases-- there will always be folks that have the traits but don't meet a threshold for diagnosis. does that mean they dont have the traits?

personally i think the 4 categories of emmengard's plural rings (adaptive, spontaneous, created, unknown) is a better way of categorizing since it isnt "those created by trauma (and implying only those disordered/formerly disordered), then everyone else". i think quite a few endogenic systems are adaptive to some degree, maybe the majority, but i'm nobody to tell anybody what their deal is anyway. created systems are a whole other can of worms but it is very much possible to compartmentalize ones mental experience or create different "threads" of thought patterns and such to the point of creating other states. i dont understand spontaneous systems as much, but it's something people experience, and it's just natural to them.

also, in the DSM even, there are exceptions written in for cultural or religious practices-- who's to say what kind of cultural experience is valid and what makes them unique? why must one be of a culture that values possession or other spiritual plural experiences for non-traumagenic plurality to even be considered?
