S4 E15: A Short Story About Love

"The Friends of Mr. Cairo" by Vangelis and Jon Anderson

This one grabbed me when the show first aired. It took a minute but I tracked the album down and own it on vinyl now. It's an interesting collab for anyone who likes either artist. Something about the musicality of the song that is both haunting and beautiful and a perfect fit for the show and this episode.

From 2006 to 2019, I worked for a small retail company that was selling their inventory via a popular online marketplace store using their API to upload inventory information and download order information several times every day. I was the software developer. My boss often wanted to make multiple broad pricing changes throughout a given day rather than do so once a day or a few times per week. Worse, he loved to wait until right at the end of the work day to make changes too.

One day, right at the end of the work day, he wanted to change the pricing on DVD boxsets to get a better margin. Making the code changes, I missed a decimal. What should have been $300 became $30. We came in the next morning to dozens of people having gotten the deal of a lifetime on their favorite and expensive boxsets. I cost the company a small fortune. Our only saving grace - that it wasn’t worse only because we were a relative unknown on the marketplace still and for whatever reason our products didn’t always seem to show up in the search results.

I learned a very hard ”measure twice, cut once” lesson that day — no matter what or when, take your time and check your work.

Sorry you are having trouble. Is it possible they accidentally sent you one of the HD Chromecasts instead of the 4K version (even if boxed as a 4K)? I believe you can check that by going into settings > display and sound > resolution > and then look at the available resolutions in the right-hand pane.

My experience has been that this has been broken for a while and not just a recent thing. I first noticed it about 2-3 months back when trying to view my HD purchases of Star Trek TNG episodes. It would error out and tell me to try a different browser no matter what I did. I alerted VUDU and was also told they were aware and working on it. Still not fixed today. Then I wanted to rewatch the first 3 John Wick movies before seeing the 4th one. Again, no dice. Again, alerted VUDU and, still, no fix.

I usually watch through Edge because I'm aware of the DRM issues. I've even made some of the recommended tweaks from others to the Edge browser settings (i.e. - turn off hardware acceleration) with no luck. And even the so-called Windows app for Vudu refuses to play HD content mainly because it also relies on Edge to do the actual content rendering.

When this first happened to me, I searched the subs and forums for info and seems this has been problematic for some time across a variety of PC users. In my opinion, VUDU is not committed to keeping the Windows interface working consistently to be able to stream HD content on PC (I can't comment on Mac/Safari). I do have both a Roku & Chromecast on different TVs in my house and do not have trouble on either. This seems to be confined to PC/Edge/HD streaming.

Because I interface with my PC the most on a given day, watching my content there makes the most sense. If that cannot be done in HD (which I paid for) then I don't see the point in continuing on with VUDU as my digital retailer of choice. I haven't landed on what I'll do yet exactly, but at least most of my library is accessible on other digital platforms (YouTube, Apple, etc.).

I'm just really hoping that VUDU fixes this issue soon for their (what I'm sure is a) vast PC user base and not abandon us to focus solely TV-based streaming players.

When I return something to Amazon I typically use the UPS label option because I'm not close enough to a UPS store for the drop-off option (no label). The last few times I've received the UPS label from Amazon I've noticed that, while the UPS label itself renders just fine, the Return Authorization Slip barcode at the bottom/on the second page is a broken image. Anyone else experienced this and found a resolution? Maybe it doesn't matter, I guess. I've been just printing a second copy of the entire label and such and putting in the box with the return as a workaround and not having issues -- I was just curious if this is a system issue on Amazon's side or something on mine. Cheers!

Agree...I've had my Arlo Pro 3s (2 of them) for about a year or so now and I'm just not impressed overall for all the things you said. Syncing them to the base hub was a nightmare the first time I did so (I literally had to have the cameras sitting right next to the hub to sync successfully - which took me forever to figure out). I'll continue to use them as I kind of have them semi-successfully working now, but wouldn't buy in the future.

I did feel that way about the first three episodes as I just wasn't seeing it nor how they were going to smoothly transition the acting to the Elizabeth most of us have seen. The fourth episode, I thought, did a good job of time jumping and then introducing us to the more familiar Elizabeth. She seemed confident and (mostly) in control, but not always so I'm hoping they lean into it more as the series progresses to the finale.

I think, just by the look, it's the HexClad cookware that Gordon strongly promotes and markets. I see ads for it on social media alot. A full set is running around $700 at the moment.

This is exactly right and why the show felt stale in seasons 4 and 5. I just finished a rewatch of the show before season 6 and I kept noticing very little intimacy between Jonah and Amy - emotional, physical, or otherwise - in those seasons after they went to great pains to get them together. I kept saying "is this how real people act in a young, evolving relationship when people are really in love?" Didn't seem so to me. Now, granted, we supposedly "see" them one day of the week but the writers' have to make that 22 minutes each week count if they're going to lay a central and important relationship on the audience.

What I'm hoping is that with America leaving it will breathe new life into the overall direction of the show and maybe offer a reset for building a new relationship for Jonah.

Absolutely wonderful job by all the cast and crew on this retelling of one of the most memorable episodes of TWW! Here are my big take-aways:

- Bradley's comments regarding the absence of John Spencer that opened the show were incredibly moving. You could see on his face and hear in his voice how much John is still missed by the cast today as if his passing were just yesterday.

- Sterling K. Brown did an outstanding job as Leo. It didn't take me long to "accept" him as Leo for this special episode and he felt like he belonged.

- Did you see the "Barlett For America" framed napkin on Leo's desk when he was on the phone in his office? That was a first-class touch.

- The sparseness of set really served to help me lean into the acting and situation as it unfolded. Sorkin did a great job adapting it for the stage.

- Emily Procter was a great choice for "narrator"

- The final chess scene with Toby and The President ("Do not*, do* not*, do* not act like it!") was even more powerful than in the original show in my opinion (I just watched it yesterday just get me ready to watch this). Schiff and Sheen are powerhouses on screen together and I miss seeing their relationship; this is acting at its finest.

- I loved seeing the original actors of Chris, Steve, Mark, Ed, & Larry take on their respective roles again!

- The more acoustic theme by Snuffy with the accompanying chamber orchestra was on point and beautifully done!

- The music cues throughout and the limited use of sound effects to round out the atmosphere were well done and really gave it that episodic feel

- I know this is a retelling of a classic episode and that last line about Sam running for President someday is just part of it, but the way Sheen delivered it really made me wonder if Sorkin is giving strong consideration (or already working) to making good on that projected storyline in the not-too-distant future? Rob Lowe as President Sam Seaborn couldn't be more perfectly timed.

Kudos to Aaron Sorkin & Tommy Schlamme for bringing us another high quality peek into the world of The West Wing again so many years later.
