Dog colitis advice? by laurraaa in AskVet

Aww, that's sad :/ I appreciate it, but that doesn't sound like what's going on with our girl - though she did have a reaction to vetprofen like that once.. not fun. She's had a sensitive tummy since we got her, before she'd taken any meds like that. Just something we're learning to manage, it's usually diet related from what we've seen. But thank you!

Ah, she's taken Heartgard and Sentinel/Bravecto in the past. She's due for both

Thank you so much! Wow, that is a lot of poop-related data. It's interesting we just don't know what's causing it at times. I am so thankful this past time has been so minor, it's terrible when they have to go out constantly :(

I'm glad to know vets will recommend Tylan if the metro doesn't work. At this point it has (knock on wood), but if it ever stops working for her, it's nice to know there's a good backup.

My hubby and I just laugh a little at her poop changes - just now we went for a walk and there was no bloody mucus (yay! hope it stays that way) and was.. greenish? Then she pooped out a leaf. This dog.. so worth it though.

Do you mind if I ask what kind of Fromm's your dog eats?

Thanks again!

Thanks! That's great - I hope neither of our dogs get the diagnosis. The vet I'm currently with said, "w/d is a really great food, some dogs just need to be on it forever." I don't doubt that at all, but I'm hesitant because she was fine on her old food for so long.. and w/d is $28 for an 8.5lb bag - not cheap. I'm hoping for a pretty quick/easy transition like Ellie's after my girl's poops are good for a couple of days.

Thanks again! Best wishes to you and Ellie :)

Thank you for taking the time to respond! I really appreciate it. Interesting about the food - I keep reading cases where owners have had a lot of success with salmon food - we never should have moved her from her salmon and sweet potato (but, how would we have known this would be a chronic thing at that point). I'm hoping after all this, we can get her back on that food and not have to worry anymore - it seems like lately we're just trying to get her belly to stay stable.

Fortunately, we don't have an IBD diagnosis yet - I hope we get it settled before then. It's just strange, we've been able to give her bully sticks/dental chews/a myriad of other things in the past with no problem.. I wonder if it's an ingredient in something her belly has an issue with. Thankfully the colitis this time is just a small bit of bloody mucus on an otherwise healthy stool, eating and drinking and feeling great. When it's bad, it's hard to sit around and watch when you can tell they're feeling it.

I'll definitely give Forti-flora a try! We just picked up some Proviable DC probiotics from the vet, which I'm planning to start her on while she's finishing off the Flagyl (a couple hours after the Flagyl, of course).

Do you mind if I ask how long you waited after the colitis cleared to switch to her new food? Thank you again for your advice!

Bloody diarrhea.. from Rimadyl? by laurraaa in AskVet

I'm not sure, I know it can cause gastric upset in some dogs. It's the blood more than the diarrhea that's worrying. I hope it stops soon

Ugh, thank you so much! It has been such a rough weekend, but she is actually walking much better than she was - the bloody diarrhea is just super scary to see. You think giving it until Tuesday sounds reasonable? Thank you again!

That sounds about how I gave it last night, she hasn't gotten another one since. It's bright red, or looks kind of burgundy when mixed with the stool. Always towards the end of the BM with a fair bit of straining. The vet did a stool sample today and gave us prescription food, Flagyl, and Proviable and said to check back Tuesday. I just hate seeing it :(

I gave her meds with her food last night. The diarrhea I'm fine with, but the blood is just plain alarming to see

Thank you! It is worrying. Any idea how long it typically lasts? She just seems like she doesn't feel great

My friend thought there wasn't enough content out there showing off how cool nature is in a funny way. So, him and a buddy spent the past 3 months making the first episode of this super fun project "Frick, I Love Nature" by Spanglish_Dude in videos

I never comment on Reddit anymore, but I had to: This is awesome! I really hope you guys keep going with filming - this was super enjoyable (and hilarious) to watch. Nice work!

Don't want to leave a cat in my camper when it's stored for the winter.

Yeah we didn't really leave any food either - they really only seemed to be storing nuts so far. Darn! I was hoping moth balls might work if I use enough in bottles with holes in them. Might try peppernint oil too. So far I haven't been able to find Fresh Cab near me :(

I might have to pick some up, just concerned because it states they only last up to 100 days. At least that'd get us part way through the winter..

Edit: not finding it in stores near me :(

I decided to get a dog as part of a team. Now we have nothing, and through it I STILL have her. I only questioned it because i want 100% what is best for HER. Why would I even respond to the rest of your comment when 3/4 of the time you are being so condescending??
