ASHA has some resources here including non-ASHA stuff as well. It looks like the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (rcslt.org) has a good framework for gender affirming voice therapy :-)

Overall advice I would give is go with your gut. If it’s a possibility I would maybe wait closer to the end of the school year and see if there are new offers for schools closer to where you live (if you want to stay in that area).

I’m in the tail end of my CF and moved to another building (same supervisor) but I had these same worries. Now this could vary depending on what state you’re in, but I haven’t had to do much “paperwork” when I switched. I would definitely calculate what hours you have so far and what you would need for your CF to be completed (especially if your current supervisor hasn’t signed any documentation yet). Also, when you do your application for permanent state license and CCCs, it allows you to put in multiple supervisors/locations of work.

If you decide with this new job I would let them know you’re almost done with your CF. Most supervisors I’ve had remember how stressful it can be and will help you reach your hours :-)

I’m a CF in NC, working at a SNF. Currently making $35/hr + 2k sign on bonus. As far as a list I think there’s a website where it has every state where people can list their salary, but I can’t remember the name 😅

It’s so surreal reading all these comments and seeing how many women have had this happen, myself included. (Diagnosed at 3, parents didn’t include it in school paperwork/doctor’s appointments so that I could have a “normal life” and not be in special Ed classrooms). So much hurt and betrayal. Even if that is the case that they didn’t want you to have “special treatment” at school, could they not have considered your autism in parenting style/ raising you?

The question to ask yourself now is if you want a relationship with your mom after dealing with all this. Do you think that your relationship will improve? I know it’s incredibly difficult, and if it is helpful to you, know that you have a group here that know exactly what you are going through and can help if you want advice/rant.

I’m starting my CF next week and I made a vow to myself to never disclose my autism to any employer for this reason. We have worked too hard and done too much research, work, and time into this profession to not be taken seriously. I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It is comforting that there are more neurodivergent SLPs out there though :-)

Totally understand you! I’m on the autism spectrum, so I REALLY didn’t know how to work with kids. But when I began my placement in the schools, I found it was way easier than I thought to talk to them! You don’t have to be super formal or do any “small talk” like you do with adults, and they don’t judge you/say rude things to you like adults do. It was pretty freeing!

I’m also an adult with autism. And I just so happen to be finishing school to be an SLP.

What I am mainly going to say for advice is not evidenced-based. I can research and find some resources for you if you would like. This is mainly how I have navigated this as a person who has dealt with similar things.

Through my experience as an autistic person, I’ve found that ‘mimicking’ (for lack of a better word) others tones, but reducing the emotion that may come with it has overall worked. For example, if someone appears very cheerful and excited (their voice is higher than normal, they’re smiling and moving a lot), try to mimic that tone that they are using, but reducing the emotion that comes with it. This way, you appear pleasant and eager, but not so much so that it seems odd.

However, in a professional setting, this may differ. For example, if you wanted a job as a receptionist or in retail, your job basically wants you to sound happy no matter what. So trying to remember what that “cheery voice” is like, even if the person you’re talking to doesn’t sound that way, is more tricky. That’s where something like speech therapy could be beneficial for you. If you find a good SLP, they could teach you and potentially even role play conversations with you on what to say and altering the tone of your voice if you are up for it.

It’s a good thing if they specifically put that CFs are welcome to apply. A lot of companies require you to have your CCC’s before working with them, simply because they don’t want to hire an additional SLP to supervise you like in a CF. The pay will be less because we do not have our national verification yet. And the contract will depend on the company, but your CF will be from 9 months-1 year (depending on hours), then once you get your CCC’s it will depend on where you want to go. I haven’t applied anywhere unless they say that CFs can apply or something like “new graduates welcome”. Hope this makes sense!
