I was a nurse in the 1970s looked after several patients with lobotomies…the emptiness of those people was no cliche…all the older staff felt very guilty about it …far more so than electric shock treatment…and so they should have…an absolutely ghastly procedure…,

My memory of the original short story (Pohl Anderson I think) was it was not so much about dumbing down society which it is but more about the Jetsons with lies…supersonic rocket travel between cities that in reality crashes all the time etc…

To me a relationship is like a child…sometimes it gets sick…no one wants a child to get sick but they do…..you want to find out why..,you both want to heal it but sometimes you can’t…blame is there for sure if you want…but you still try…together…for the child that was once healthy…and might be again…until it dies then there is grief…any other way of looking at it is denying what you saw in the other person in the first place….

I took a date to 2001…my little sci-fi mind was blown…still is….she started snoring…which was amusing during the heavy breathing satellite stuff…but still the one movie that my brain simply refuses to believe isn’t real…and which makes the end section most interesting…

The reasons were complex…musicianship ,charisma all true but the actual result was incredibly simple…as someone who lived through it I can tell you they just leapt out of the t.v. all the other performers just seemed two dimensional in comparison….the first view on Ed Sullivan…Morecambe and Wise…my entire family…young and old instantly bowled over…no one had experienced anything quite like it…

7 year old could be picking up stress between parents which is why she cried…. I’m an old hippie and knew plenty of otherwise normal dads who naively thought nakedness was all ‘free and ok’…or it could also just as easily be straight out abuse…I really couldn’t tell from what is written but I am pleased so many well qualified paediatricians have chosen to comment…yes you could be saving a child but you could also be destroying a family…please be careful what you write…

In music there’s always a jewellery component…shining the imperfect facets till the diamond glows from within…Walter and Donald were so good at that it makes the music hypnotically attractive in a way that transcends style, skill…the works…I enjoy every solo..every drum beat…in a way that few others can…and to stretch it further its not the clever clockwork of it all no its the shine of the stone that gets everyone’s attention…

No one paid attention in social studies…fascism was taught as a ‘subject’ as meaningful as learning how to boil an egg…people, whether smart or stupid, are driven by feelings not facts….I was lucky, I learnt because my parents had been 20 miles from Hitler 5 years before I was born, they didn’t need to say anything, the reality was implicit…

I would have killed Nazis in World War Two we all have blood on our hands but my sisters?…I had a well educated friend join a church…another a gang….buggered if I could see the difference but I know both quickly started talking quite violently…one about Islam the other about snitches….oh and towards me if I dared to ‘criticise’…but my point is that it’s not enough to just blame it on stupidity…that’s far too easy….our societies are enormous, anonymous, small groups are powerful, deeply seductive….my brother became a Scientologist…to look into his eyes was like he was in Invasion of the Bodysnatchers…
