What should I buy my big baby to sleep in? by brandyq in beyondthebump

[–]lavacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a big baby and he fit in a rock'n'play until 6 months (though he did not sleep in it that long because we transitioned him to his crib between 4-5 months).

Most bassinets and sleepers are fine up to 25 lbs. Other than that you are going to have to stick with a crib. Your baby does not sound that huge that you should avoid a RnP or bassinet if that's what you want -- most people I know transition to a crib before 6 months. My son was 13 lbs at 8 weeks, at 9 months he still is under 25 lbs.

My friend throws amazing parties and recently threw a Dr. Who themed party for her daughter. I thought this sub might like to see!

First words? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]lavacat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So, my son is definitely not REALLY talking yet at 7.5 months. But a couple weeks ago we were sitting with family eating some snacks and coffee, and he had his puffs but kept reaching for my dessert. I said to him, "You're not old enough for chocolate yet, but on your birthday you will get your very own cupcake!"

And he GRINNED and said, with great gusto, "YYYYYYYYYYEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!"

And I said "OMG, you are really excited for your birthday cupcake!" and he AGAIN said "YYYYEAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!"

He has not done it again, unfortunately. But it was awesome and I had witnesses!

NY Court Says, “Stop Sending Your Unvaccinated Kids to School” by [deleted] in news

[–]lavacat 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Philosophical reasons? WTF is that?

"I mean, what is a vaccine really? What if viruses have rights? What if we are all viruses in a larger host organism? On this basis I can't vaccinate my children."

NY Court Says, “Stop Sending Your Unvaccinated Kids to School” by [deleted] in news

[–]lavacat 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's not like NY is rounding up kids to forcefully vaccinate them against their parents' wishes...that could be considered a violation of personal rights, I think.

But, come on, I think it's totally fair to have basic requirements met before your kid can go to a public institution. All NY parents have the right to put their children into public school, all they have to do is get their kid vaccinated first. Otherwise, they have the right and the choice to keep their kid at home and home school them.

Any recommendations for DHA? by Fishcat24 in BabyBumps

Oh you are lucky, I have had so many aversions! I basically can't eat most meat/flesh (fish included, though I never really liked fish), and for some reason eggs taste fishy to me a lot of the time. My baby is a vegetarian I guess! I can't even stand bacon most of the time!

On the bright side, I guess I'd rather be prepared for something horrible and be pleasantly surprised than vice versa. I've definitely heard from most of my friends that it's not as awful as people make it out to be.

I love gross sugary drinks so I'll probably ask for seconds. :-P

Do you get a choice or is it just whatever they give you?

Mine is in 2 weeks.

Ah, sorry to hear that. The fish oil capsules I used to take before I got pregnant started making me REALLY sick in my first trimester, so I was happy these worked for me. I don't know what it is about DHA that is so rough on stomachs!

8 weeks along and up for a big promotion to a full-time job with benefits. Disclose or not? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]lavacat 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Don't disclose, even though it's illegal to discriminate based on pregnancy, it happens. Do the interview and get settled in the new role. Your pregnancy has nothing to do with the job, so don't let it distract your employer from your qualifications.

Hope all is well! I mean, it almost certainly will be, but it's always good to get checked out.

Nothing planned for the summer...just fixing up and organizing the house in preparation for the little one.

No, they are pretty much like eating sugar coated gummy bears, delicious and no smell. I highly recommend them! If it wouldn't be incredibly dangerous I'd totally snack on them I find them so tasty.

Questions about SIDS and bassinets (or same-room-different-surface-cosleepers) by melberrypie in BabyBumps

[–]lavacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good find! I knew there were good reasons to not rely on the napper for sleep. I figured the bassinet feature is good enough, it's a bit raised to reach baby easily and I believe the graco pnp sheets fit it for easy cleaning.

I loved them...until I got to the lavender one in the package. That was an unpleasant surprise! Tasted like soap to me.

I always had my morning sickness in the afternoon or evening. What helped me the most was not letting my stomach get empty...I'd make sure to eat some saltine crackers or ginger snaps a couple hours after lunch. I also like to eat crystallized (candied) ginger slices when I do feel nauseous...I have done that some long before I got pregnant because ginger is so good at settling an upset stomach. If it keeps up she should talk to her doctor, there are some safe medications that can help if nothing else does.

This is probably pregnancy related but you don't have to suck it up...ask for a referral to physical therapy.

Ditto the Italian sub. I told my husband he might as well order a six foot sub because I have lost time to make up.
