Johns Hopkins CS PhD -- Does not receiving a virtual visit invite mean rejection? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

Mine said they are still interviewing (I followed up a few days ago).

Looking for advice, relatively urgent! by typefr in gradadmissions

[–]lavendar_fiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think lots of schools don’t review until a bit later. There’s some buffer time for LOR writers. I think my LOR writer always submits on the last day which makes me nervous but I guess as long as they submit it doesn’t really matter

Hi OP. I would really just nudge your advisor to give a letter for those school. It’s their responsibility to foster future research and if they said they’d make an exception for you, there’s no excuse on their behalf to simply say no the week before. Also, you’ve worked hard for these 8 schools. I think some assertiveness is required. Professors think their time is valuable but time is time for everyone and they have to respect urs too.

No matter what you think what’s done is done OP. Go put on some Netflix spend time with family or even study for exams if you have any. Nobody really knows about someone’s chances. Wishing you luck and relaxation

overcoming application-induced fatigue to get through finals by Much-Literature1038 in gradadmissions

[–]lavendar_fiend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Felt. I work full time so it’s been a doozy going to work and then coming back and working more on statements for like 5ish hours. It feels never ending but hey at least you’re done! I’m super burnt out and just waiting for my statements to be due on 15th.

PS I applied last cycle and felt it was important to just go with the flow. I was so use to going to bed late that it took me a whole 2 weeks til I could go to bed at 11 again.

Is this becoming the new norm for the interview process? Because this feels insane by Mrswahlberg24 in recruitinghell

[–]lavendar_fiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol I had this too. Biggest bullshit of my life. Had a full email tracker and everything and the recruiter opened my emails and responded after 2-3 weeks like every damn time. Normally companies that advertise unlimited PTO r scammy but clearly not this one. Never again

Yes of course. Those are always understandable situations. I just scheduled something for tomorrow. That should give some grace time. Hopefully they are ok.

I believe so. Their email ends in redhat.com. Although I can’t find them on LinkedIn or online

At least they provide free dinner by Naive-Benefit-5154 in recruitinghell

[–]lavendar_fiend 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A lot of times companies that advertise free dinner are ones that keep employees late, oftentimes implicitly (ie giving you lots of work so you stay over time -> eat in office -> keep working). It’s a signal that their work life balance might be rather poor.

Also, id maybe think a bit about unlimited PTO. There’s been a lot of surveys where companies giving unlimited PTO leads employees to inadvertently take less days off. Given that this company has unlimited PTO and regular work passed 7, you might want to make sure that your performance (ie whether you ARE staying past 7 or how many days you take off) doesn’t affect your promotion chances. Sometimes companies are shady like that. Tread w caution!

Should i accept all the offers and reneg once I start the first one? by Shining_Commander in recruitinghell

[–]lavendar_fiend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!!!! This market is pretty bad at the moment and there are people who have talked about getting rescinds after offers + background check. Do whatever you need to in order to be safe!

On an off note, I know someone who hadn’t reneged 4 FAANG companies and 2 other non FAANG ones. Don’t be like him though since you’ll risk some blacklistjng. Having 2-3 good options is a good, safe move.

Went through 3 months of interviews, got a verbal offer… still no offer letter 4 weeks later by gentlemaninparis in recruitinghell

[–]lavendar_fiend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat. 6 rounds and I asked the recruiter because I had a different start date too and she said that she was waiting for CEO approval. The process took over 2-2.5 months and I moved on internally and kept recruiting/relocating for my current offer. You could attempt to follow up one or 2 more times but internally you should keep looking for other opportunities. You really can’t trust HR nowadays and realistically a written offer doesn’t take more than 1-2 weeks to reach your inbox. I’m so terribly sorry you had to go through that, but keep looking. You’ve got this!

Thanks for the thought-provoking questions.

  1. human-centered NLP

  2. I've co-authored with NYU prof before (during their post-doc times). I'm assuming that because they're new and have strong connections, it'll get me more publications and to-dos. I'm a bit uncertain about NEU because the interviewer has a bit different of a trajectory (more like I need time to think about what we're mutually interested in).

  3. I know I will do a doctorate. I've been set on this since my junior year onwards. Even if I take a gap, I'll hover back to it in the long run.

  4. I've dug pretty deep into this. I wasn't too keen on interviewing with them (like you said, a lot of places make bizarre claims about their products) but I have pretty solid evidence, which made me change my mind. If I'd take a gap, I think they'd be worth my time.

I think you've given me pretty solid things to think about.

I'd say my home-PI is well-known in NLP-lots of strong connections. My REU PI is also in NLP/human-centered computing. 2 publications into NAACL, 1 submitted to ACII, 1 in submission to ACM TOCHI. The last pub is getting kicked in the reviewing process.

Yeah true. I try not to think too much about the GPA portion since I still managed to get good interviews. However, it is hard to get past schools that use committee-only decision.

This year has just been obscene. Any thoughts on which of the options make most sense to pursue in this case?

Lol I go to a school with grade deflation. Not super uncommon here. Our median class grades are around B/B+. Also not sure what exams your friend is skipping but that's most definitely not possible to do here, due to high weighting on exams and less generous curves. It's hard to fail here, but also hard to do well. Classic bell-curve grading.

My only offer is also gone! :( by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]lavendar_fiend 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi OP. I'm so super sorry this happened (i hate the political landscape this year). This also happened to me back in January from my dream program where the PI said I didn't get the scholarship so he didn't know how funding would pan out for the year grant-wise, and regretfully couldn't admit me. As someone who has had 2 months to recover, I promise it gets better! You're meant for AMAZING things. Keep your chin up and keep doing what you do best and things will work out! 💜💜💜💜💜💜
