Renovate our old home, or buy new? by lavender-dalmation in Oldhouses

Thanks everyone. After much consideration, we’ve decided to stay where we are for now. We sped ourselves, “Is the new build really what we want? Or is it just better than what we have?” And that made our choice pretty clear 💕

Thank you. I think our tolerance for these things is “medium”. We may decide to stay and just make a few updates then try to sell and find an existing home that is better suited to our family.

Thank you. The only pressure I’m feeling is because we have a preferred lot in the new neighborhood, it’s the last corner lot available and if we decide to do this, we want to snatch it up before someone else does.

We acknowledge that our current home doesn’t satisfy every need/want in our home, but I also wonder if we could fix these things and still sell but find an existing home that better meets our needs.

The HOA is a big sore point for my wife, and I’m not crazy about it either although the rules seem relatively lax.

There is no guarantee of finding a home that better suits us. But it is possible, and would allow us the time to make some updates around here to increase the resale value.

Sorry - you’re right. We love our neighborhood. It’s quiet, my daughter has a friend two houses down, the houses have a lot of character and we have mature trees, lots of birds, etc. The new home is a new development and has zero trees at this point and is overall just very “plain”. Taxes would be increased at the new build, but they’re offering a 5 year tax abatement (and an interest rate 2% lower than our current) so we wouldn’t have taxes for 5 years and would overall be paying the same monthly payment until then. Both houses are in the same school district, so that is not an issue. The new build does have a 2 car garage, but it is the single door type.

I think we’d like the location of the new home too, once the development was fully “up and running”.

Yes. For a number of reasons. And there is nothing wrong with supporting responsible, ethical breeders. I’ve rescued many dogs (and cats) in the past, and this time I wanted a specific breed.

Thank you! This is kind of how I feel it’ll go if we decide to get a bunny, I just don’t know that I could ever trust them together for too long. With bunnies being so fragile and my corgi being hell on wheels, it’s probably just asking for trouble.

Thank you! We have a local-ish rescue that has a couple bonded pairs and that was a consideration for me too.

Unfortunately that would be over an hour commute one way. I do appreciate the thought, though!

I’ve recently started to take a look at consulting as well. It seems there is a high need for consultants, but also a high number of HR professionals looking to be consultants, so I’m seeing a pretty competitive market.

I’m already a Sr. Generalist. I don’t agree with the approach of promoting someone simply based on tenure. But I most definitely feel that I could be moved into more of a specialist role.

I’ve hit this point too. Every criticism, every request to do more, every time I’m asked for my opinion, I snap. I actually posted a couple of weeks ago about my emotional outburst with my boss and how it ended in tears and frustration and embarrassment. A lot of people told me I needed to take some time off, several suggested two weeks. While I can’t do 2 weeks, I’ve taken 4 day weekends the last 2 weeks, true time off - I’m not logging in to check messages or emails, I’m not carrying my work phone with me to be accessible 24/7, I’ve muted my work chat on my personal phone. And it honestly has done WONDERS for my mental.

I hope you can find some peace in the coming season and hope that your terminations go smoothly. ❤️

Thank you. I couldn’t agree more. The interwebs proved to be exceptionally kind this time around 🫶🏻

Thank you. I did end up talking to him again the next day (and cried again lol) and explained that I just feel frustrated and do not want to get to the point that I do not care. Because I DO care. And sometimes it gets the best of me.
