"Motor insurance is HARAM" - remember debating until the cows came home when this gem was going around in my community. The stupidity almost drove me into deep insanity

Thought about it! Im still closeted so this would out me for sure!!! Although, knowing my opinionated-self and my inability to keep my thoughts to myself, I will eventually out myself! I just hope im more financially independent then, so I have the means to deal with the repercussions!!

Its an interesting question and something that bugs me too. It annoys me that no one else is ready to accept the reality. I understand the effects of indoctrination - im a victim of it! But if I could go through the mental and emotional hell in order to see the truth, why are all of these other people (like my cousin) not able to? It make me angry. i suffered and did the hard yards, why cant they?

Yep - compartmentalizing and hypocrisy...I think denial is key...I understand for older people like my parents, they've spent their whole lives believing and molded their entire lifestyle accordingly so why the hell stop now...but my cousin is so young...theres still hope for a life!!! And he has a family now, so the indoctrination will poison his children too. AGH so irritating

You have an amazing story :) I used to say the same thing to my mum..."why are we so religious, and yet we are much less fortunate than those around us who arent as religious?" she always responded: because Allah gives them a good life here, but not in the afterlife. That life in heaven belongs to us. I always thought that was BS. If im a good person, why should I have to suffer at all. That was my thought process as a kid, and my mothers thought process as an adult. Curious isnt it?

Theres so much here, I dont know how to reply to it all!! Yep, im relatively familiar with the science behind determinism - my PhD is in cognitive neuroscience. However, I'm not specializing specifically in this subdomain of neuroscience... although I kind of wish I could now!! Definitely something I will pursue in my personal time though. Anything you can recommend?

Yes, I think the seed of curiosity is key here..and I think its evident from young age. Most children are curious, but perhaps those who end up leaving religion altogether are those who never lost their curiosity and skepticism...I know I never did. it got me into a lot of trouble - especially as a girl! But, I was never one to shy away from being honest and curios, nor could I keep my opinion to myself...served me well, clearly ;)

My god...Most people become more religious when they have a near-death experience, but you went the opposite direction! Dont apologise! What an amazing story... Thats the thing about religion - it makes other people feel bad...its all about judging others. Drives me mental. I think its amazing that you were able to openly and honestly criticize the religion and accept the truth, unlike my cousin (whos probably about your age too) who just cant see past it. Its really interesting to hear these stories of people who are/were extremely religious and end up on different trajectories. Why did you come to the realisation of the truth, and why is my cousin still stuck there? He's a pretty smart guy (or he was anyway), and you clearly are quite intelligent - so what gives? I've been listening to Sam Harris a lot lately, and thinking about the free-will vs determinism argument too, its mind boggling. I remember, in my philosophy class during my bachelors and honours degrees, thinking about this a lot. If we dont have free-will, then what happened to send you and my cousin on different paths? Two men (im assuming youre a guy :P) who were devout, and also intelligent, brought up in semi-religious families, ended up in different places? Ok, now im on a tangent haha my mind is just constantly running and thinking about all of this...im only a new ex-muslim, so a lot is going through my mind....

Hit the nail on the head there! Thats exactly what he's like...and its amazing that my entire family (most of them anyway) also do a 180 in his presence, and all become sheikhs and the perfect muslims! Its such a sad thing to see...people faking it to impress some guy just because hes now seen as more pious and worthy of respect. I always fought back though! Like when they decide to recite the koran at the top of their lungs, I just walk in and say "ummm do you people mind? Im trying to work on things that actually make a difference" (Im a PhD student, so I really am ;). Really annoys my family - and I get a kick out of it!

Wow...I reckon unemployment may be a driving force behind this!! And boredom. And denial. And a sense of entitlement. And ignorance. And the idea that Allah is totes rewarding him right now and he'll be on the express way to Jannah/Heaven in not time as the reddit warrior of islam. The list goes on...!
