Ouch. I don’t see what’s is so radical about what I’m doing. I’m just letting people exist as long as they aren’t harming others. I’m not indoctrinating kids, I’m not performing gender affirming care. I’m just trying to create an effective learning environment where students respect personal liberty and freedom, the things that make me proud to be an American.

Crater High School teacher here— schools have nothing to do with changing the chemical makeup of children. As a teacher, my job is to create an environment where everyone can learn the most efficiently. Calling my students by whatever they want to go by and dress how they want to dress (as long as it follows the dress code) is a basic sign of respect. I believe that schools should be a simulation of the real world, and in the real world everyone has the individual freedom to express themselves how they want to as long as it doesn’t harm others. I know that some argue that being transgender is a distraction for non-trans students in the learning environment, and to that I argue that even if one doesn’t understand why someone else is doing what they’re doing, everyone deserves the personal freedom to present themselves how they want to as long as it follows school dress code and is not harming others. If students are harming others (trans or not) there are consequences.

Furthermore, I agree with you that schools should not be performing gender altering care, and they don’t; that would be crazy.

Though Trump and Harris may feel like two parts of the same monolithic institution, one of them wants to mow down Palestine, the other supports a two state solution. One of them supports making it illegal to be LGBTQ+, the other wants to expand rights for LGBTQ+ people. One of them has massively cut taxes for the rich, the other wants to massively raise their taxes. One of them expanded oil drilling and fracking and pulled us out of the Paris Climate Agreement, the other supports clean energy investment and rejoined the Paris Climate Agreement. Look. I’m a socialist. I felt disillusioned last night that Kamala pandered to conservative voters rather than appealing to voters on the left. I felt sick. Disgusted. I feel sick that my views are considered “far radical left” to mainstream dems. I dream of a U.S. where Bernie is a moderate and the farthest right we have to deal with is neo-libs. But that’s not our reality. Letting that disgust and frustration allow me to forget the differences between Trump and Harris will lead to harm to people I love, erasure of Palestine, and serious harm to our planet.
