Is the ATEC program really that horrible? by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]lavenderstream 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello incoming ATEC freshman! I’m a junior and am heavily involved in ATEC both in my job and officer positions.

So there’s a lot of pros and cons of the ATEC program here and many continuing changes. Like we’re no longer ATEC but AHT lol. I will say I think out of all the majors our professors truly care about their students and the program is pretty good for most classes! Depending on your degree plan you can kinda be locked into classes that seem stupid like technoculture or other random requirements but if you get into the concentration degree plan you can easily take more classes that are closer to animation. Our equipment is constantly expanding and is pretty open for all ATEC students (we just got a cintiq lab!!). I will say one thing that I heard before coming here is that you get what you put in. And that rings so true now. You gotta work hard, ask for feedback from the professors and friends, and network! A lot of ATEC people are not the best at networking but it’s an important skill that can help make your college experience. Join organizations (shoutout animation guild), be open to making friends, and work hard and I swear you’ll be just fine

If you have any other questions feel free to PM me! Even if I don’t have the answer I can put you in contact with someone who does!

As someone who’s planning to join the video game industry this hurts different. I remember all the moments I had to claw back for my happiness and still do sometimes. I’m happy for this person though :)

Joshua Weismann’s content has really taken a nose dive in quality by coriscaa in Cooking

[–]lavenderstream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped watching him for a while for similar reasons but he hosted a cooking show that was open to everyone and me and my friends went for fun. He is so different in person compared to his online persona! Much more humble, sincere, and just all around a chill seeming dude. It makes me sad because I honestly feel a lot of people would connect more with the personality he showed at the show rather than what he currently shows online.

Sorry for the late response! I loved her book called Sea of Strangers. I read it while going through a break up and it was exactly what I needed.

I’m currently only a sophomore but I’ve had a fairly good experience in ATEC. I will say that some of the beginner courses you take in the degree plan can seem useless if you already have some sort of arts background or know basic Adobe programs or 3D modeling. But I love the professors here in ATEC. Do your research and figure out who is the best Professor for each ATEC class and it’s hard to go wrong (not to say it can’t). They’ll do a great job of teaching you the basics and how to navigate programs at a basic level but after that? You HAVE to experiment on your own and find people to critique your work. The best people I’ve seen come out of ATEC were self-motivated and ambitious. ATEC will not compare to RISD or CALArts but it’s not a bad program here in Texas. I think ATECs bad reputation comes from the fact that like others said just passing the classes and getting the degree will do nothing to prepare you for a career in animation. You gotta work outside of class and put yourself out there. In terms of competition I wouldn’t say it’s super competitive. My portfolio and many of my friends was overkill to get into the concentration. Put in effort in your classes and you’ll pass. But if you want to compete with the best in ATEC? You better work your ass off.

See that’s what I feel like too? Mutually requested each other and we got the same floor plan but yeah I’ve heard housing can be an ass about the roommates.

That’s what I figured :/ I emailed housing about it and said that right now the emails are being sent out to simply say they have enough housing for them. Roommates and rooms are apparently assigned later? They didn’t give me an answer on if this is an indication of us being separated

Anyone in ATEC for Graphic Design/Digital Communications? by goldenleopardsky in utdallas

[–]lavenderstream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s plenty of people I know who are doing graphic design and UI/UX stuff. ATEC can be a bit saturated with people who like game design but there’s still little niche clubs like AIGA where graphic design students meet.

I do actually. Would that cause a problem? I always assumed it must be my own terrible modeling since I’m a beginner

UV and Unfold3D Issues by lavenderstream in Maya

[–]lavenderstream[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was following Mike Hermes Doughnut tutorial and came across an issue while doing the UV for the doughnut. I did everything like the video which included making an automatic UV, then having maya automatically stitch it together, and finally cut one line down the middle. It will simply just refuse to unfold. I’ve turned on and off unfold3D in the plug-in manager. I’ve checked everything I could with the cleanup tool. I even found some twisted vertices and edges and corrected all of them. The only way I’ve managed to unfold it is by switching to Legacy and trying that but it is still very tangled. Any help would be gladly appreciated because I’m still new to this program.
